Hi there,

In light of recent posts on here I want to change my insurance. I was wondering who does the best insurance for a veteran.

Are there any companies I can take out policies with on line or do you need to phone up for decent insuance?

Thanks

devilsauce you might want to go read some of the posts reviewing E&L that are on here. They are rather notorius for not paying up or for making it so difficult to claim that you never get your money.

My lads are insured with petplan ive got a 28 yearold, a 25 yearold, an 18 yearold and a 17 yearold. With petplan my ponies are insured for illness as well as injury untill they are 25, you will find that with most other companies that they stop covering for illness (which includes colic cover) at either 15 or at 20

Pet plan are good for veteran insurance if you take out a policy while the horse is classed technically not a veteran they will insure you for all risks of mortality up to the age of 25. Otherwise Shearwater will insure up to 18 depending on value any pre existing conditions or exclusions etc.

LOL tell that to my friend who is still waiting for the to cough up on treatment which was agreed BEFORE the horse was referred to an equine hospital in Sept last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have a bad name past, present and future by the looks of it, which they have thoroughly earned. BTW she had been with them for years and had previous claims settled, all be it slowly and maintained they were fine........................Guess what she will be changing as soon as they pay out.

Ive been with PetPlan years, also have claimed whilst on Veteran insurance with no bother. Sadly next time we are up for renewel he will no longer be insured as hes over 30

I just had a quote for Petplan as mine is 19yo and was cheaper to stay with NFU for same benefits - by a long shot - not sure what age you have to be insured by with NFU as I was already with them

Don't go with E&L - a lot of vet practices treat you as uninsured if you are...

Admittedly, beyond liability cover (BHS Gold can deal with that) I think insuring a veteran would be marginally worth while at best. You'd probably do better saving what you would pay in a designated account and self insuring - that way no excess or exclusions and you can make the decision yourself if you need to.

Wishful, im with pet plan for my 18 yearold, he has no exclusions is insured for 2k and my excess is very small, he will be insured for colic up until he is 25. I wouldnt put him through colic surgery after that age anyway.
