am just sorting out Raff's insurance as going to move it to NFU as they do our house insurance etc now we've moved house.

should i insure little Iggle? he's a shetland. first and foremost he's a companion. he is ridden sometimes by my 2yr old son. in the summer we will do little in-hand classes with him probably. does anyone else insure their companions?

bear in mind we're trying to get our monthly outgoings down as low as poss as i'm on maternity etc etc. if money was no object, obviously he'd be insured! i'm just wondering whether it makes sense financially to insure....

we have our oldie who is a companion insured. as he is a veteran the cost is relatively low due to his low value/not havin loss of use/exclusions (no age related diseases/illnesses can be claimed for) but when we got hit with a £1800 vet bill for a puncture wound we were rather relieved! we have also had a £500 bill when he got kicked in the front teeth! we have definately claimed more than we paid!

I would certainly want 3rd party insurance and if you can't afford an unexpected vet's bill (which I gather from your comments is probably the case) I would get insurance. You can get policies which are cheaper if you have a higher excess.

Check your house policy. I have all my animals insured for public liability on that (with NFU).
I don't bother with vets fees.

I have tubs insured but only for £200 - I wouldn't be interested in any money when he dies its only to cover vets bills. I think mine petplan insurance is just £120 a year which is only about £2.50 a week. Its money well well spent

I am so pleased we insured out shetland companion - last year she suffered an horrendous bout of colic and was taken off to Liphook and was on a drip for 3 days, she nearly didn't make it and I was mightily relieved the insurance covered the £3000 bill. I insure everything now, even my donkeys!
