Quick one

I have'nt insured my tack for some time now but i have recently bought a Thorogood synthetic saddle and wondering whether for £25 a year i should stick it on my horse policy. or shall i carry on chancing it?

Just wondering how many of you dont insure your tack? And can you insure tack for cheaper as a seperate policy? i dont have a house so cant put it on the household insurance.

I've just re-done my horse insurance because I realised that my old insurance didn't cover my tack if there were more than 10 horses on the yard - which there are. I guess it's to do with it being a more "attractive" proposition for potential thieves if there's a lot to pinch!! Definitely insure, but make sure your policy covers you for old for new replacement and that your yard and security (locks etc) fit with the policy stipulations. Some policies want alarmed storage, particular types of locks etc. Read the small print. Bit of a pain, but if you've ever had your tack stolen - I have - you won't regret it.

It is much easier to insure all risks on your house insurance. No worries about your locks and security complying, and it is still insured in your car and at a show which it often isn't on equestrian insurance. We've found tack cover on equestrian insurance simply too expensive and too restrictive. All for something you can usually get for free by adding the tack to your existing contents policy. And yes I have tested it - they also paid out for rugs, grooming kit, head collars etc. Far more than equestrian cover would have done.

OP you don't need to own a house to have contents insurance and indeed if you live with someone else in all likelihood they will have a policy you can put it on - £25 isn't much for a separate policy but why pay anything at all as listing it on house insurance is usually free

Mine is also on house insurance.... Although our tack room is concrete and well locked, with guard dogs, it didn't meet the insurance requirements (no bars on windows and too many saddles in there) so I couldn't put it in the horse insurance anyway. Worth checking the small print!
