Hello there, just wondered if anyone had taken part in this online dressage competition, i wondered what the quality of judging was like? I think it could be the perfect route back to competitive riding for my girly who has had over a year off with back troubles!

this is a very good competition. i think that the judging is very constructive. if you use it as a method of instruction, it can serve you well. its very good to get the feedback, then you can work on any little issues at home. a friend of mine uses it, and she has found it very good, she uses the test sheets in her lessons with her instructor and also, gives her things to work on if she cant afford lessons every week. its all good.

My yard does! Bromson Hall, we are in the winter league. Many are mostly happy hackers so dont go to venues to compete. While i've been out of action my friend Liz has ridden Tia in the last two comps. First time round we came 5th with 72% and this month we are probably last in the canter test at the mo cuz it was gale force winds and Tia was tense and did some major spooking!

We do a yard competition too based on the scores we get back so we couldnt just do it again on another day. Otherwise I would have told Liz to have a go this weekend when the wind was much calmer.

The judging is quite good. I like that it is the same BD judge each time so there is consistancy. When I compete unaffiliated at my local venue we were getting anything from 76% from one judge all the way down to low 59-64 from another.

Also the woman that runs the website is a riding instructor and she writes lots of tips and advice to help you. Some people on my yard have had more than a page of advice.

I expect its going to get much more popular, Your Horse are doing an article on them next month I think. But I hope it remains unaffiliated standard as it is really for those who dont go other places to compete. I dont have any transport and I only have one venue in hacking distance.

Sounds perfect, is it Run by BD rules? Plaited? Bit wise etc?

No its not. You can find all the details on the website. You dont need to be in show gear. You dont have to be plaited or anything. Unless you want to enter a showing class then you dont need to look smart. Any bit for most of the classes and horses can wear boots and bandages. Its all very relaxed. I think its cuz they want to open it to anyone at all.

I plait Tia and go without boots or bandages mainly because I like to make her look pretty. Judges shouldnt take into account what the horse looks like but i'm quite sure your more likely to get higher marks if the judge likes how pretty your horse is!

Plus I think Tia realises it is a special occasion and she must perform better than in a normal schooling session.

You should make a yard competition out of it. Its good fun. The lady who organises ours (and her hubby films us all and sends it off) splits the yard competition into 'novice' and 'intermediate' so those of us who have competed in dressage comps before arent competing against the happy hackers who havent. Which means although Tia did an appauling test, we were the only 'intermediate' ones doing the canter test this month therefore will get a 1st rosette!

I like watching everyone elses tests on the website too so I can see why they got a better score etc.
