Thanks for all the advice yesterday, however I got my mum to call the farrier (i'm at work!!) and luckily he came right out! He says it's not thrush but it is a bacterial thing which basically eats the frog away.
He has told us to keep it clean with a very strong salt water solution, keep it dry and once it's healed he is going to put pads on. I seem to remember now that last year he had problems with his front feet and needed pads.
