went for a hack today, quite windy but lovley sunshine, mare threw her toys completley out of her pram just because i asked her to go left instead of right out of yard!! she walked a couple of paces spun round and tried to f-off back to the yard, so turned her rode with loads of leg she did the same, she is a quick, sharp mare and can spin on a sixpence, gave her another try and she mini reared and spun, so....... i jumped off and walloped her behind with my stick and frog marched her up the road!! every time she tried to stop i flicked her up with the stick, once down the road i got on and rode the rest of the way with her really striding out, and apart from a few spooks which i didn't worry about as it was so windy, she was really very good,
the reason i got off was i feel i have more control on the ground and i am much more happy to deal with something sodding about when i'm on the floor rather than on top - i have run up welsh cobs in my time so don't take alot of notice of something leaping around me!! however some people say you should never get off, when i got back i made her walk past the yard and up to the top of the road and she was fine about it, also had a tractor come past and apart from a little jump and trot she was alot better than usual, so a couple of good points after her strop!!
BTW teeth saddle etc fine!! probably PMT ruddy mares!

The way I see it; you wanted to go left......and you DID go left....you won! Doesn't matter how you got there, the point is you did get there.

If it had the desired effect and you felt safer then I would say you did the right thing.

I however feel alot safer on board and having only got off during a Bert tantram once I will never make the mistake again as I had no sodding control when I got off and got dragged back to the yard, in and out of bushes and narrowly escaping flailing legs

You have to do whatever works! Toffee is the world's worst (or best, depending on how you look at it) napper, and Troggy has tried pretty well everything - leading, sitting stationary for over an hour, even turning her around and going backwards! As long as you don't give in, everything else is ok.

I think if you sorted the situation you did the right thing. I'd never get off again after our nightmare last year where he galloped off down the road on his own!

You won the battle though - well done xx

In the end you won, i have gotton of Honey before when she refused to go down a track, thankfully it worked and all was good. I think you have to do what you feel safest doing.

I would have done the same, you can,t let them have their way as it only becomes an ongoing battle between the two of you. Well done!

I'm in the getting off brigade too! I hack along busy roads to get to off road riding, apart from dawn on a Sunday morning I can't avoid busy times. Therefore I can't risk my safety or the innocent driver's safety if my horse has a paddy on the road! I believe a nappy horse is saying "I don't want to pass this point" not "I don't want to carry you past this point"!
I spent months using this tactic with my "insecure" youngster and now, although spooky, he doesn't spin anymore!

I did exactly the same thing with my mare yesterday and got the desired effect of her walking past the field which had the scary monsters (sheep) in it. I say if you can get on and off safely, do it. Its better than having a huge fight (there are times and places)

You went i the direction you wanted to go in, thats the main thing. Whatever works best for you too is the correct thing to do, its horses for courses as they say
