Really interesting 2 part article on Werner Schockemohle's views on breeding, bloodlines, the influence of the TB ... and lots more that will get many of us going (either grinding our teeth or cheering!) Lots of the names that he mentions I've never come across before .... Well worth reading, and for all of us who are aiming to breed high quality sane riding horses - he's for us!!!! Meant to say, that was so full of insights into how a hugely experienced breeder views the material he has to work with. I've just realised I'd better comment before this drops off the bottom of the page.

Lots of fascinating points- so he used to import TB fillies from the racing sales? I didn't realise Continental breeders liked using TB as the motherline. I was very gratified to find I've been thinking along the right lines re. the value of the TB as tested on the racecourse (comment about forelegs)...

Interesting what he had to say about Trakheners ( though he seemed a bit lukewarm about them; somehow I'd assumed German breeders would almost automatically revere this breed above all others). Fascinating what he said about the way they blend with Arab blood. Didn't someone make a similar comment on here a while ago?

Also it was odd to see how AI and modern breeding technology- the availability of "exotic" stallions from other districts (or countries) has shaken up breeding in Germany; I thought it was just us, & that breeders on the continent were well used to it. Apparently not. You can see from this how mighty is- or was- the horsebreeding machine in Germany, compared to the way we do things over here.

Seasoned breeders like this are such an absolute mine of knowledge. I wish there were more links on here like this one.
