Breaking in a yearling

Like I say, cannot imagine doing this with my yearling. She'd probably kill me stone dead

Interesting to see the stages though.

Yup, thats how it's done, but thanks for the link, it's interesting, as we do all the work prior to this stage, and this is what happens to ours once we've sold them at Tatts. We train them to lunge and lead etc so that they have the basics already there for the breaking process.

What stages of that would your yearling have a problem with?

My boy was 3 in June. He has done everything I asked him to without throwing a paddy. We're still learning and improving on those things obviously, because for the main part of his 2 1/2 years with me he's been allowed to be a baby in the field..... but he took the bit first time, he didn't flinch at me doing the girth up tight for the first time, I don't think he even noticed me plonking a saddle on first time. He lunged straight away. Long-reining is slightly more complicated as I hadn't done it before either.

Maybe I just got lucky, he's my first youngster.

There isn't really anything I disagree with here TBH, a lot better than I've seen in a lot of places. The only thing is I wouldn't get on in a stable, but each to their own. I mean, if she was mine I certainly wouldn't go about it so quick, but I would be bringing on for Dressage, not racing, and of course there is a huge difference in training. as I said, I think they sound sensible people and I have seen an awful lot worse.

lovely to see....

pretty much txt book really

OP...What couldnt you imagine doing with your filly???

They start their racing careers at 2 years olds...so its done young and on a quick turn around, agree bog standard practice for racing.

But yes I do also see your point.

Oh, is the point because they are yearlings?? In which case, they are racers and thats how it is done. They have a good covering of muscle by sales time, and are very fit (from sales prep walking and lunging) and ready to be broken. TB yearlings are much more grown up than you think

ETA they have usually had about 8 weeks work prior to being broken, so it's not like they've just been pulled out of a field and sat on

not much wrong with that-shame more of them dont bother with such thorough groundwork tbh. think more riding horses could do with the straight out hacking approach myself-better than riding them in circles for months.

No, wasn't critising any of it. Just never found such an informative pictorial view of the process. Came across it when I was Googling for a 'yearling bridle'. Amazing what you come across when you're not looking.

Re questions about MY yearling. Heck, I've posted before about MY yearling before.... enough said!!! She's been the Devil incarnate recently. Wouldn't catch me sitting on her for all the money on the planet!!!!!!!! Nooooooo way. Going to let mine mellow for a few years yet

Jee wizz, no. Don't know what's gotten into my baby recently. Think someone's been sneaking up the yard at night and been feeding her amphetamines!!! If mine goes a QUARTER as well as the one on the web link when her time comes, I'll be counting my lucky stars. LOL
