i have a 14.2hh 18yr old welsh cob, who for the past 7years i've had him, has been 100% sound. then on the 24th march we noticed he was ever so slightly lame on his right fore... but not all the time. there is no heat within the leg or hoof. when trotted up his lameness is intermittent - on soft and hard ground. we've given him 2weeks box rest now, but hasn't helped... the lameness is no worse/no better. if he isn't sound by mid-week (week beg. 6th april) i shall call out the vet, but in the meantime, does anyone have any past ex. with this or any ideas/info?

It could be something like a bony spur on the coffin joint in so much as your horses symptoms mirrored mine. They say 99% of lameness begins in the foot which is why the vet will always check out the foot first and nerve block that area first also. My horse had a single injection into his joint and four years later is as right as rain. x

At his age it is most likely to be arthritis. However, it could also be any number of things. I would get the vet out to give him a thorough check over. Box rest may help some conditions but may also make other problems worse over time. Better to get an accuate diagnosis from the vet to then be able to treat him appropriately. If hes been lame for over a week with no improvement you really need to get to the bottom of it so you can treat it.
good luck
