We are eventually getting stables at home but in the mean time we have a large internal barn of which we hope to build some internal stables in. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions of a cheap/ safe way to do it?
I needed 2 more stables and thought I would add them to my existing 2 outside stables but it was too costly as you also need the brickwork & concreting which believe it or not cost more to do than the stables.
I have an old brick barn & decided to convert that. It's not a huge barn but I only needed 2 stables. Phoned around & IMO the best I found was Chart Stables. I ordered 2 internal panels, discussed with them where I wanted the doors in each panel, they were great to deal with, delivery arrived on the day promised, I didn't have to pay for delivery as my panels were on the lorry with someone else's. Guys put the panels where I wanted them and hubby & I fitted them (they left us all the bolts etc for free too).
I think it was around £700 for 2 15ft panels. So I now have 2 extra stables measuring 15x11. I don't have much of a gap between the 2 stables but I walk the horses straight in & as the stables are large enough, work with them in there, ie feet, rugs, grooming etc:
I have just had 3 internal stables put into our old sheep shed. The internal stables are seperated by breeze blocks walls (local builder did the brick work quite cheeply), 5 courses high, the breeze blocks were quite cheap (from mkm) and a joiner made the doors, door frames are 2 posts (as in post and rail posts) it has made a good job once the floors were concreted. I had them done this way to fit in with the size of the bays of the original shed structure.
Ideally the walls need filling to give them strength and if the horses were to fight then either some wooden partitions or grills could be fitted on top of the walls.
Looked into woodern partitions are sliding doors but they were much more expensive.
All depends on your horse really. Daisy has expensive tastes and will only go in a stable with solid walls or she tries to kill the horse in the next stable. Would yours be okay with low walls or partitions?
Thank you all very much for your input.
Nijinsky- this was what I was thinking about doing. Your stables look fab. Have done the call around today and chart do seem pretty good. Did that price include toe door too or was that seperate?
Starlight 2 and dwi- Yeh really like the idea of the breeze block ones too but my horses are 17hh warmbloods so would have to have quite a few more courses high. They look great though!
We have a big american barn that used to be a potato store and has been converted into 16 stables, do not use breeze blocks as that what was done in our barn and we are now having to take the walls down and rebuild properly with concrete blocks and instead of 5ft high we are now making them 7ft high to stop horses fighting over them.
We are in the process of moving to a bigger farm we are having internal stables ours have come from Cheval Liberte we spent 6 months researching and looking at the different stables on offer we went for the ones we have as they are very very strong....and the wood comes pre treated as standard. We have had 13 delivered initially with a further 5 in a few months they were very good on pricing and have done us a very good deal.
