I have a 5 YO KWPN who I had owned a short while, when my trainer suggested sending to the vets as we were progressing rather well however, the canter was just AWFUL. As though the horse struggled with every stride. Lovely through the trot.
Please note, not signs of lameless and well fit.
Vet lunged him, checked him over really was not too worried. X-rayed him and then suggested he had had a trauma (hence not progressive) resulting in Interspinous Ligament Tearing.
I asked if this was/could develop into kissing spines and was told categorically not.
Suggested lunging on Pessoa 5 times a week and up to 2 hours a day on walk for 3 months.
Am now 2/3rds of the way though the 3 month rehab and have a VERY fit horse!
The transitions into and out of canter have definitely improved but the canter is still very much on the forehand and he still grunts as though he's finding it hard occasionally (only in canter). His stride is unbelievably long under saddle and on the lunge. Under saddle it is actually difficult to ride a 20 meter circle as pulls/leans so hard and as soon as you try and collect, you loose the canter to trot.
The trot is fantastic, open, lifted extended, tracks up - but still I'm sure he's still uncomfortable in the canter despite doing exactly what the vet suggested. I appreciate we have a month to go....
Has any one done similar rehab for this problem and what was the outcome?
