Introducing a Malamute to household

I have had 2 lodgers in my house for years. The dogs are fine with this as both are dog lovers.

The girl has moved out and a friend who I met through walking the dogs has asked if my room is still free. She has told me she has been unhappy with her boyfriend for a long time but didn't have many options as she can't afford her own place and is limited where she can house/flat share as she has a 14 month old Malamute.

Now she gets on great with my 2 on walks and have all travelled in my truck together when we went to the coast. but, would her being in the house full time be an issue I wonder.

Points of concern are:

Feeding times - would have to be seperate as Pads is food dominant.

Walking - I walk my dogs a lot, i'd feel bad for leaving her behind in the house if her owner was at work but she isn't nec, the type of dog to mooch about down the horses with mine.

She would have her own room obs, and own living room so could live pretty independently of mine if needs be.

Lots to consider, but I want to help this girl out as her living situation is far from happy and her boyfriend resents the dog and I think is unkind to her when he wants to teach the girlfriend a lesson

House is big and dog is a sweetie - thoughts?

Go for it. Separate feeding times shouldn't cause that much of an issue if the house has room, surely, and the walking thing should be ok as well - leave the Mal at home with a kong, or she might even surprise you and take to a mooch better than you think. At the very least if it doesn't work then the owner will have had a breathing space to find somewhere else for herself and her dog without a horrid bf breathing down her neck and being mean to her dog.

Sounds good apart from if you are going to take her down to the yard with you keep her in the stable when your riding, they still have the same hunting instinct as a siberian, has she been brought up around and to respect horses?
Obviously another thing to think about is how your gardens fenced is it secure?

Garden is totally dog proofed, very high secure fencing

We took her to meet the horses yesterday and owner kept her on lead, she was very excited and there was much nose licking all round! The trouble is she can be very vocal (sings along to Hollyoaks every day ) so i'd be worried about leaving her behind, in either house or yard and don't want mine to miss out on coming with me for her sake - maybe a trial basis is needed?

Dogs in my current house hold have different feeding and walking times - and it is no bother whatsoever. I would give it a trial run!

Definitely trial it, if your schooling you could stake her out next to school so she can see whats going on, i just wouldnt let her be loose as if she spots a horse moving fast she will more than likely give chase

Cyrus, I wouldn't trust her loose around the horses as she's not mine anyway - chances are her owner would keep her on the lead if she came with me

yes i second giving it a trial-Tassy is a mal and she goes loose at the yard- she doesnt chase horses in fact is quite afraid of them and keeps distance when i go and fetch one in-she follows us at a distance- are you in a detached house? Their howl can penetrate walls!

Agree with Spudlet - give it a trial - that way you give her breathing space to sort her head and her life out if nothing else.

Your a lucky one as am I, Loco can be let off around the yard etc but I certianly wouldnt leave her off lead if i was riding etc and couldnt give her full attention, I especially wouldnt allow a malamute that shows excitement around horses off either

Yup house is detached but there is a young baby next door Well she knows the room is there, will leave it up to her if she decides she needs to get away we can only see how it goes.

Mine's funny in that she's absolutely fine around my horse, after months of careful introduction, but will become very over-excited around others and would undoubtedly chase those. I let both horse and dog mooch around the yard if no-one else is about but it's more stressful than anything else because I have to constantly keep an eye out for cats/birds/rats and make sure she hasn't slunk under the paddock fence. It's a case of gauging mood/responsiveness of both horse and dog on any particular day.

We're terraced (old Victorian terrace with proper walls though!) and next door have a young baby - we make allowances for each other - though I must say that my baby doesn't tend to howl at 3am on a weeknight like theirs.
