My grandparents are picking up their new cat from a shelter tomorrow. He's a 3 year old boy and is bigger than the dog! The dog is also 3 and they've had him since a pup.

The dog is fine with cats, but the cat has never lived with dogs.

It's a big house and they wont be left alone with each other for quite a while, but in the mean time....?

Any tips on introducing them will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

When I bring new cats in and It's not the dog that is going to be the problem...I usually place the cat in a large dog crate in my living room...this allows the cat to get used to the presence of the dog and not feel to threatened as their is a barrer between the twofailing that, ....as long as you give the cat access to get away and hide if need be it will be less likely to attack if feeling threatened.

If it's the dog Im worried about I baby gate the kitchen...to allow the dog to see the cats frequently...but not able to get at them...they quickly get used to them and become bored

I think that as CALA says space to get away from each other is crucial. They both need a safe space to calm down and see and smell each other without being forced into contact (which can lead to confrontation). The cat might like a covered area, so a covered cat bed inside or a towel over part of the crate, might give him some privacy. As they get used to each other over the days you can try allowing them closer contact and increase this if all goes well (I'd be weary of leaving them alone though for quite a while, just in case!).

I would also reward any good behaviour, if the dog is settled and calm with a treat or cuddle.

The cat will also need some alone time to bond with your grandparents without the dog scaring him away.
