Hello all,

I'm having a blonde moment and can't decide what to do. My horse has lost a bit of condition over the last few weeks so I'm going to start adding Alfa-a to his diet. I want to add more weight, condition and improve condition of coat without adding too much excess energy.

I will be starting to introduce sugar beet this week and a friend of mine has said I can borrow some of her alfa-a to start to introduce that to my feed.

My question:
how did people introduce alfa-a to their horses diet that were already on feed? Did you remove any chaff that they already had and just use a little bit of alfa-a to start with slowly upping it?

Also what do people feed along side their Alfa-a? Would a mix and sugar beet be ok with it??

Thanks in advance from a very confused person!

Mine gets Dengie Healthy Tummy which is alfalfa based, but with different vits/mins and a probiotic added to it during manufacture. He was getting D&H Safe & Sound before that. I introduced it over a couple of weeks as he can be quite sharp and silly, so I wanted to get him used to it over a slightly longer period of time. I started with just a handful of it, and a handful less of the S&S. Two handfuls the next day, then 1/4 scoop and 1/4 scoop less of S&S, etc until I got to the required amount of HT and had phased out the S&S completely.

Yes, it's fine to feed along with SB/ speedibeet. I will probably add speedibeet to my horse's feed eventually, though he doesn't need it yet. HT is a fairly complete feed (I think!) so I don't need a mix alongside it, but I have fed mixes with Alfa-A in the past. I am just feeding magox and micronised linseed alongside my chaff/feed ATM.
