After idly browsing horses for loan/share this morning, I pinged off an email about a lovely 19-y-o 17.2hh Shire/Trakehner. Went to see her this evening and, subject to sorting out contracts, etc., I've got Gemma two days a week!

She did advanced medium dressage in her younger years but, after a ligament injury, she's taking life easier. The idea is lots and lots of hacking, with lessons and the occasional bit of showing. And for me to learn an awful lot from her.

She has the biggest trot I've ever ridden and I felt as though I was constantly about to be bounced out of the saddle but, despite feeling as though I should be booted out of the yard and not allowed near such a lovely horse, both her owner and her previous sharer thought I rode her well. (I must be better at pretending than I thought...)

I'm so excited!

Is it normal to be up at 1.30am stressing over whether I'm capable of doing this? Argh! God knows what I'll be like if I ever buy one!

I had a lesson on her today, and feel as though I'm right back to square one with my riding! She's an absolutely perfect schoolmistress - as long as I give her precisely the right aids, she'll do what I'm asking. If I'm slightly off? Nope! But I ended the lesson with some reasonable walk-canter transitions, and with her tracking up nicely, so I'm evidently improving. And with Gemma to teach me, I'll keep on improving!

We've been for a few little hacks together, where she's been perfectly behaved, even with motorbikes whizzing practically up her bum.

So far, her only flaws are:

- Gets very excited when we turn for home on a hack - and she knows when we're turning for home, even on a circular route!
- SO DAMN BIG. I have to stand on tiptoe to brush her back!
