Introducing Halo the Springer (and me)

Hi all,

Thought I'd introduce my new wee rescue Springer called Halo, she didn't have the best start in life but she's a right happy wee beastie now.

Halo adopted me on Friday past and we're already having plenty of fun; she had clearly never met sheep, cows or horses before so a few minor freakouts have happened...particularly when Ozzy the Friesian came to say hello. So far she's made friends with my vizsla, black lab and papillons though so she's doing well.

We've got lots of work to do on recall, sit, stay, etc but it'll all come soon enough. We're going to start her Level 1 gundog training at the end of the month.

I may be coming to the Springer people on here for help and advice at times, I'm pretty well versed in gundogs but I've never had a spaniel before(wish me luck!). Hopefully you won't mind.

Thanks for reading - I'm a long time lurker but very rarely post, although I thought Halo warranted it.
 
Oops, silly phone! Vizslas being velcro dogs but she is something else, although I am putting this down to her background rather than breed.

She's got cracking confirmation too and hopefully she'll be worked lightly. According to a keeper friend she seems like a natural so fingers crossed, although even if she doesn't work she'll just be a much loved pet :)
 
She's currently asleep on my feet after a massive run around the field with the others, otherwise I'm sure she'd be saying thank you to everyone for the lovely comments.
 
Oh, first question: do they all snore? I can honestly say not one of my other dogs has ever done it! (I know it's not a medical thing because my own v trusted vet gave her a good going over today) Daft springer :)
 
Yay more spaniels!! I have 2 boys, they are extremely loyal but did have a bitch who I rescued who has now gone to live with my parents and she was extremely velcro like, she had to be touching and leaning on you at all times
 
My little Sprocker girl is like velcro too but not in a separation anxiety way. She makes burbling noises in her sleep with her legs going lol sounds like a guinea pig!

She's such a gorgeous girl your so lucky! Amazing how trusting & loyal spaniels are that's what amazes me. Hope you have loads of fun together keep us up to date with how the gundog training goes etc.

She is beautiful - and a lucky girl to have landed on her feet after a bit of a false start in her life.
I have 2 springer girls, Purdey (2yrs) and Holly (5months). They have brought so much fun into our lives, I am sure Halo will bring you years of fun.
Keep us posted with your gun-dog training. We have trained Purdey a bit and she comes out beating with us, but that is only about a dozen times a year so for the rest of the year she is our very well loved pet!

I'll keep you all up to date with our training misadventures, I've never attempted it with an older dog before so it'll be new to both of us.

And thank you for the velcro/snoring replies, v helpful. She is a wee sook when I'm with her but she was fine when kennelled for an hour this afternoon (even though I've only just got her, I need her to be able to hang out with the other mutts for a few hours at a time so I think it's best to introduce it sooner rather than later - and there was someone around the yard the whole time), although she was delighted to see me back again :)

Poor little girl, what a horrific story, so glad you have taken her on. Something will have to be done about the spangles on here, they are seriously taking over but until the rest of us can work out what to do welcome to you and Halo.:p

The rest of us that dont have Spaniels are definately in the minority, I often have a friends Springer to stay so Im not a complete outsider.:)
 
The two on the left in my sig snore, the l/w sounds like a bandsaw! The vet checked him and he's fine, just the way he is. He is Velcro like but the youngsters rarely get off my lap, so he gets less cuddles nowadays. :D

Good on you for rescuing: it's my next idea, rescue bitch. ;)
 
To be honest I had no intention of rescuing but my friend told me her story and it broke my heart (on top of the abuse/abandonment she suffered, the SSPCA rehomed her a first time and she was returned to them within two weeks because she was too much to handle, I don't really know what they expected with a Springer... :( ), then I met her and now wouldn't be without her. She's fit in so well; just like part of the furniture already :)

I've only ever had dogs that I know their breeding inside and out, either because we've bred them ourselves, through research or recommendations from trusted friends, but after getting Halo I wouldn't hesitate to rescue again :)

Anyway, I'm going to stop writing essays now, thanks again for the continued welcome and for letting me know I'm not the only person with a snoring dog! Night folks.

Mine snores, her and my OH have competitions on who's loudest !
 
Oh my god I've just read the story, there are some sick people about bless her, mine is the most affectionate dog I've had, she is calm in the house not bouncy bouncy as you'd expect with a springer.

I had no intention of getting another dog after mine died, my OH's friend in work's daughters had 1 each then after a year decided they didn't want her anymore, we had one and his friend had the other, not a breed I would have gone for due to reputation but I can honestly say she's lovely. I thought my GSD was affectionate but she's just adorable and inteligent.

:D thanks. Yeah the rescue did an amazing job, her vet notes said PTS because she was in such a terrible condition but someone had too much will to live/charming personality and made it through.

We had our first go with a dummy launcher today and she retrieved it without a problem (although not to hand) and wasn't gunshy. Such a cracking wee dog that I'm very happy to now call mine :)
 
A heartbreaking story with a happy ending! Well done you, I'm sure you and Halo will have many happy years together. I can't understand what is in people's heads when they abuse animals like that. I'm so happy her luck changed and she has a fantastic life with you to look forward to!
