It took a bit of persuading the OH but the logic of getting a companion for my 20 year old mare (now retired due to a back injury) for when i take my newish mare out was clear to me. So last week we took on a short term loan from the Blue Cross (6ish months to see how we get on and how my mares settle with a third). Im also a total sucker for a sob story and would have more if i didnt work to have to pay for them! As you can see they are very well settled! The newbie is the coloured mare - my grey doesnt like to pose for the cameras (so looks a bit like Eor!).

She's circa 5 and she was taken by the Blue Cross when her owner handed her over (following a big worm burden issue that knocked her for six) so the plan is just to get her strength back up before she's backed (maybe 6 months or so - hence the timing of the loan). She is lovely but lean so a few months of 24/7 good grass will hopfully sort her out. She should make a lovely riding pony and show's there are very good sorts at rescue centres.
