Has anyone used iodine for treating cracked heel/mud rash type injuries?

Vet has said to use it on Chloe's sore, and I'm just wondering what the advantage is over hibiscrub-type washes...

Wouldn't it be terribly irritating?? I though Iodine stung.

How about something like udder salve instead - which is soothing and healing.

We used udder cream when it first flared up as I couldn't get close enough to do anything else with it. She's had flamizine on it for the last week, and it's still not healing, the scabs have fallen off and left a septic crack. I thought she needed antibiotics to help her, but vet has been up and said iodine, and bute for four days.

So far I've been to 3 chemists and not managed to find any iodine so it may not be a problem anyway, but yes I think it might be quite irritating on an open sore. I'm wondering if he's suggested it to harden up the skin

I've always found that the cream didn't offer much protection against mudrash as it simply was not emoliant enough - hence using the salve, which is just lovely stuff.

Iodine and purple spray are two different things.

Purple spray is gentian violet not iodine and obviously comes out purple.

You can buy iodine spray though which comes out yellowy brown.

Thanks, I had a feeling they were different!

My dad has found a little bottle of iodine in his local chemists, so we're ok for now.
I've got some more details from the vet, and it's only for use very diluted to scrub her sores, and the bute is to enable us to scrub them without causing agony, so going to try this for a week.
Apparently the flamizine has caused it to heal too quickly, so hasn't helped her get better

My 4 year old mare has chronic vascular dermititis on all four legs which presents similar to mud fever. We have tried several things inc some new trial from my vet. She is now on prednisolone to treat it inside out but in terms of cream the best thing so far has been to buy a tub of aquaeous cream 500g and dilute it with 10% of the iodine solution you have found.

Incidentally hibiscrub has recently been withdrawn from human use in wound control as research shows it damages the new tissue as it forms.
Good luck

any nappy rash cream works
ie zinc and caster oil you want a water resistent barrier cream for cracked heals and mud fever
something that sooothes and heals

if mud fever wash with petherdine from vet cost about 6 quid over the counter clean area if nessecary clip legs and then apply zinc and caster oil for a couple of days

mud fever is a bug thats in the ground
normally lives in wet and swappy conditions ie muddy fields as wet wet water logged
and some horse are more prone to getting it than others

so you need a good barrier cream - to cream the legs sometimes its worth putting it up the pastern joint

big tub of zinc and caster oil isnt much to buy tesco do it cheap
