Hi

Sorry random thread but hoping someone can help! Had my blades come back from being sharpened and so they will still wrapped, unfortunately the bottle of iodine in my box has leaked and seeped into my blades which now look like they have gone rusty! Am very cross as fairly new blades! Dumb question any way of cleaning the blades? Can I still use them?

Thanks :-)

Aw OP! Not good ): sorry to hear that, I'd be pretty annoyed too.

If it was me I'd try scrubbing them with a wire brush to try and get rid of the rust, otherwise maybe try soaking in an acid, eg cider vingegar or white vinegar for a while, or try look up some online tutorials as you can remove rust in a variety of ways to varying degrees of success. Should be worth a shot though. ;)

I wouldn't use them rusty personally. They might knacker your clippers up as they wont be functioning at their best, I'm not too sure.

That's all the help I can really offer OP, sorry. :S

More likely to be staining from Iodine (brown) than rust. It will most likely come off just by using them. Using a wire brush on clipper blades is not a good idea.

Oh thanks :-) yes not keen on using them untill I can sort out the problem!! Would I damage them if I used a wire brush? Stupid question! I guess if they are knackered I might as well try 😬😬😬

I wouldn't use a wire brush on blades, personally. Why not ring up the sharpener firm and ask? Or give them a good dose of WD40 and run them.

Try a wire brush but dont brush across the teeth, there is a good chance you will snap them! Brush in the direction of the teeth. Run your thumb over the stained area. If it is rust,it will feel rough, if it is smooth you may be lucky. If smooth oil them up and try them. That really is the only way to test. If they clip, use them as normal. If not, pop them to a sharpener with an explanatory note an see what they say. If you take a photo of the damage/possible rust can you post it up?

I would just wash them in warm water with washing up liquid I am sure it will come off iodine does stain but I manage to get it off my hands easy enough, then dry them and cover them in clipper oil and put them back in the box I find wrapping in a oil soaked Jay cloth helps stop any rust.

I've used a wire brush on mine as they were too clogged up. It didn't snap the teeth on mine, and got rid of the hair well. Just me I guess. Hope you figure a way to get rid of it all the same. :-)

I'd try a soft toothbrush first. If it's just staining from the iodine that should get it off without doing any damage.
