Hello, my horse has arthritis of the fetlock and had a steroid injection in january this year. He has just started showing a few problems again so I have had the vet out to him today. The vet has advised me to look at IRAP treatment instead of another steroid injection as my horse is only 6. Does anyone have any experience of this treatment. Thanks

My horse has had irap in both hind suspensories and in the collateral ligament in one of his front hooves.
And along with a rehab program is now keeping everything crossed sound and in full work .

He had 2 courses, his collateral ligament was rescanned 4 weeks after the first treatment and it showed it was healing really well.

Irap is a natural antiinflammatory agent that is synthesised out of the horses own plasma, so I would expect it to work equally well on arthritic conditions :)

My mare had IRAP injections into the front fetlock nearly 2 years ago. She has arthritis as a result of an injury. The steroid injections only lasted a few days for her so my vet referred her to Rossdales.
She had 3 irap in total. The first seemed to make no difference but by the 3rd she was getting up and moving so much easier! I'd retired her as a result of the injury but once the arthritis had set in she was lame after she had been laid down. Once she was up and moving she was fine but after the IRAP she got up and was fine straight away! My insurance paid for it so dint know about the cost side. Was warned its not 100% to work but as its made with the horses blood there's few side effects. Good luck, hope its goes well for yours

My big cob has had IRAP injections into his fetlocks almost 6 years ago.. He has arthiritis in his fetlocks the same as your horse.. he had steroid injections but they didnt work so we went for the IRAP treatment.. he then had eggbars on for a year and the in got him back into his normal shoes then after looking into it hes now barefoot.. hes in work getting ridden prob 5 times a week for approx 5 miles each time we go out.. nothing fast but at least we can hack out and enjoy life.. i am so glad i got the IRAP for my boy.. i also used magnetic boots on him during his recovery.. not 100% sure if it helped or not but hes sound now and thats all that matters to me.. As long as hes happy and has a good quality of life.. He too was 6 when he was diagnoised.. i was gutted as i had only owned for 11 months when he went lame..

That sounds really promising, how often has your cob needed the IRAP injections over the past 6 years. Did he just have the first course? thanks

Hes only had the one course of IRAP injections..i think if i remember correctly he got 3 injections at the time and hes been sound since.. i havent really dont much jumping with him since but we have done a wee bit.. we mostly hack out now. i really hope it works as well for your horse too.. i changed my horses living arrangements too.. hes now out 24/7 with a field stable.. he used to out during the day and in at night but the vets said its better for him to be mobile as much as poss due to his arthirtis so hes out all the time, clipped and rugged up. He goes in and out of his stable as and when he pleases.

One thing to consider - check your insurance as the treatment is very expensive. It has had very good results but unfortunatley it didn't work for my horse, apparently as the damage was too great and although there was a very marked improvement, he never came sound again
