Ireland votes YES

Aparently not. think most voted Yes as clearly no one was ever going to be able to explain to the general public what exactly it entailed as they didnt know themselves. I disagree with the Government putting it to vote the 2nd time - however I did change my vote as felt *slightly* more informed this ime round. God knows did the other governments of EU countries actually read/understad it when they accepted it without putting it to vote -the Taoiseach admitted the first time round he hadnt actually read the Treaty!

Ireland spent several 100 years trying to get rid of British rule, and have now voted to be ruled by the continent. I look forward to reminding people from Ireland of this change of heart regularly.

I just hope that we are allowed to vote on this matter.

Someone interviewed on RadioFour was outraged and made me laugh.

She said our government have said 'you did not vote the right way the first time so do it again'. 'That's what Mr Mugabe would do.'

cameron had better get his act together othewise I think UKIP will be getting alot of of blue labour's votes....

Sadly, I think you are right...

We are too stupid to know what is best for us, so our masters will choose for us in case we decide wrong.

No other country is(was) allowing the public to voice their opinion by going to the polls. Unfortunately though, with the economic situation in irelnd (which is far far worse than that of the UK) to vote No now would be shooting ourselves in the foot. The country could not possibly recover on its own - at least not in my lifetime. Plus, now that our economy is receeding at a rate of knots, we will be in line for whatever grants and money the EU is handing out (which we used to get upto the height of the Celtic Tiger and the inclusion of the Eatern block countries) and boy do we need them. the truth of the matter is, we cannot afford to exclude ourselves. Believe me, I would far prefer we had never allowed the EU so much control but now is not a good time to back out.

And for the record, this is NOT equivilant to being under British rule. Your people conquered and ravaged our countryand left our ancestors with nothing. How dare you compare it as such.

Ok it's good to remember the past but what happens in the future is what matters.. maybe the EU will once again pump large amounts of money into southern Ireland, however there are other and possibly more deserving poor countrys now members of the EU and they ARE poor not like Ireland which for the past few years has been drunk on easy credit and a false property boom and is now suffering a nasty hangover....

Yes, true. Either way, no other country was willing to go the same way and being in exile fom a trade, employment and industry point of view will do us no good. Its not really about what they might "give" us financially ( i did put that wrong in the last post) its more about the benefits of being part of a common marketplace.
For the record, my genertion is only starting out in the real wrld now so played no part in driving up prices and fueling the celtic Tiger. many/most of those who lived to excess are those who knew not of hard times and are about 30-40ish now.

South of what?

Southern Ireland as a country is an incorrect term. It's the Republic of Ireland.
