It is looking more and more like Iridium implants are the only way to treat Diva's sarcoids which have developed in the corners of her mouth.

Has anyone had this done to their horse and could you tell me the cost involved?

I am worried that she might not be covered on her insurance as we had one removed in August which we did not claim for.

I understand she will be in isolation for 14 days so will need to factor the cost of livery in top of the treatment.

Thanks

Cost is usually around £3000 for iridium wires, so pretty pricey.

The AHT is probably the nearest place to you that can do this, but it might be worth speaking to Liverpool University as they have more general expertise in treating sarcoids and may offer a different form of therapy that would be cheaper.

My vets are discussing this case with DK at Liverpool so it might be that we end up sending her there.

Hmmmm that is alot of money - seriously worried that the insurance company may not pay especially as I did not claim. I am not sure whether they will have excluded it or whether you get 12 months from date of notification.

Derek treated my friend's horse who had sarcoids inside his eyelid, and in the corner of his eye. It was certainly more than £1000 then (about 8 years ago I think) but they used "second hand" inserts to cut the cost a bit. It was a complete success but be warned - no-one can go even remotely near the horse for at least a week afterwards so they all get terrible thrush for standing in sh!t for that time.

Talk to them and tell them what your vet is considering. They should only exclude the sarcoids from your next renewal date so you should be able to claim up until 12 months from when the first one was treated. Depends who you are with but have always found being up front with them is the best policy.
