I've just bought a lovely ID but I am clueless about Irish breeding and I know very little about what the breeding info means in her passport! Her sire is marked class 1 (ISH: App). I presume this means that he's approved for ISH breeding? Dam is marked as an AID, and then ID: Sect A. Various other relatives are marked ISH Sect A as well. Anyone know what this all means? There's quite a lot of breeding info in the passport so I would love to find out a bit more about it.

That means she is appendix ID. Okay so this is usually when horses are not 100% draught but are so true to type that they are allowed into the studbook anyway. For instance this was the case with Clover Hill, the legendary stallion. He was actually by a TB, Golden Beaker, but was so true to type that an ID inspector made the very controversial decision of including him as an ID - a wonderful decision for the breed as it turned out.

When I see that a mare is AID that is music to my ears, as I know then there's a little bit of TB in there which will add quality, improve movement, yet the horse is still technically an ID. I'm selling a horse with this breeding at the mo, gorgeous easy ID temperament, beautiful movement thanks to his Mum being AID. Happy days!

Thanks Irish gal. That makes sense - her dam was out of an ISH - overall she is 1/8 TB and 1/8 ISH (That's as far as the passport goes back). Do you know the relevance of the classes/sections? It looks as though stallions have classes and mares sections, is that right?

Class 1 stallions are those that are fully approved; (ISH app) means approved for the Irish Sport Horse studbook. If the stallion was class 2, he wouldn't be fully approved. Then among the Class 1 ID stallions they are graded gold, silver and bronze depending on achievements and progeny performance.

I'm not 100% on the meaning of sect A for mares simply because any passport I've seen the mares are always section A. Actually I think it may mean they are in the main section of their studbook as opposed to AID for instance, when they are in the appendix. Who is the horse by?

Very good, that's the same as the one I'm selling. He gets some lovely horses who are doing well in all spheres. He is one of the best ID stallions in the country.
