Has anyone bought horses from ireland? Can you ship them over without a passport as someone said you can do it on an age, colours and markings sheet? is this legal as i thought the point of passport was to use it when transporting! is it dodgy if they come without or only if you get caught?

Also at what age does a horse legally have to have a passport? ay info much appreciated:)

Hello, I live in Ireland, and it is not legal to ship horses anywhere without a passport. All foals registered in Ireland (and most horses in Ireland are registered and passported nowadays) must be microchipped and passported if they are sold through sales. Not sure what you mean by "dodgy"?

it's dodgy that you're asking IMO!

the passports are EU legislation as far as I'm aware so yes, you need a passport to move a horse from Ireland to England and all breeders should be having microchips and passports as in the UK

hahaha yes does look dodgy that im asking, but went to look at a horse for sale who got shipped over on a colours and markings sheet so just wondered what the situation was with that because it put me off a bit even though a lovely horse! So wondered if he had been shipped illegally but they have now passported him and ive seen it...sooo? would people avoid buying still or just go for it now hes here and passported?!

The sellers are acting illegally anyway by selling him without a passport now, regardless of how he was imported.

ETA didn't read properly, surely if he had a passport number then he had actually been passported and it must have been mislaid?

well he is passported now...maybe im mistaken and he already was but it didnt come with him but he was shipped with colours and markings sheet and passport number.

Anyone who thinks that "most" horses in Ireland (by which I mean NI and RoI) are passported is living in la la land ;) There are thousands here without passports, and many go through the sale ring (not the proper big sales, the little local ones) with "passport applied for" alongside the entry.

It may be illegal to sell or transport horses without the appropriate passport, but it most certainly happens.

I've also seen several aged horses for whom passports have been gained bases on markings charts, where the ages given are, shall we say, trimmed to suit?
