I would like to buy/rehome/rescue an Irish Water Spaniel. Have tried the breed rescue with no luck. I cant have a puppy at the moment for various reasons, so am looking for an adult dog or bitch. Without importing from the USA (seems a bit excessive) I simply can't find one.

Any help pointing me in the right direction much appreciated !

I've put another link on your initial thread.

It is worth trying the breed clubs as well as rescue as sometimes a retiree eg, not working well or a bitch that has had a c section, that is not a rescu but may be available if a home comes along.

A small breed -numerically - compared to say a lab, so you should expect to wait for one - even via rescue. Try phoning breeders to see if any have run on one for the show ring that isn't going to make it if rescue isn't throwing up anything.

One breed that I've never really had anything to do with. I've only known 2, one was a wild arsed liability, and beyond corrective training, I'd have thought, and the other was a puppy heading in the same direction.

Even though they are, correctly, spaniels, I get the impression that they're mostly used as retrievers. They're a handsome dog, no question of that, but they're a breed which has never really found much popularity because of a rather intransigent view of life, and more amenable breeds being available!!

Short of buying a pup at weaning, I'd suggest that you contact breeders, as there are bound to be one or two which are returned as untrainable, and then if you get one, batten down the hatches! ;)

If you manage to find one, will you post some pics?

Alec.

I could pm you the name of the breeder I bought my pup from, she is quite well known in IWS circles and might be able to help point you in the right direction. My 'pup' is now 11 and has been a fabulous dog. As Alec says, they can be quite wilful and do need very firm handling, mine has only ever been a pet and has never caused me a moments worry but I believe one of the reasons they have declined in numbers is their lack of popularity as a working dog. Smurph is my 2nd IWS and I think they are the most fantastic family dog,but I am very biased. Let me know if you want a name.

I know of an Irish Water Spaniel that needs a loving home. 4 years of age, a dog he's loving and full of fun. His owner has just started working following college and can't give him the time that he needs.
