Hello everyone!

I was just wondering if there was anything anyone could recommend to make the mane and tail on my irish X less wirey and more soft and silky?

He's my first horse and arriving in a few days so i'm pretty excited. Unfortunately at the moment his feathers are clipped, his mane is very short but not hogged and his tail is very wirey. He needs some sprucing up to say the least!

I will be throwing on the pig oil and sulphur over this winter (he is living out) on his hoofs and up his leg and letting the feathers grow out. I'm reluctant to clip him out fully since i think he could do with a bit of added protection and get him in a better state for next summer asap.

I'm just a bit unsure what to do for his mane and tail besides the obvious conditioner. Can i put the pig oil and sulphur on them too? I wonder if it will help the "wirey-ness" to mane/tail and soften it up? if not anything else you can advise?

Thanks everyone

I have heard of people putting pig oil on to manes and tails but never done it myself.

Can I just add please do a patch test first.... I stupidly didnt on my mare and she has now come up with lumps on her tummy! I forget how sensitive she is!

Good luck with him and pictures please

ofcourseyoucan - yeah im really wanting to grow his hair out, i'm hoping maybe next summer or the summer after i can show him in traditional - hence the hairy monster look is very much needed!

Hellooo
Im one of the Irish x mane and tail club

My boy wont let me pull his mane and its wild to say the least. Ive mastered the dreaded solo comb and can do a 'tidy' job with it. Saying that we did pull his mane once when he was sedated and the results looked fantastic until it started to grow out and now half of it sits on the other side! His tail is a tail pullers dream but Im no expert at pulling tails so I used a tail rake and got good results. It grows that quick and thick I decided to let it grow out as its lovely and wavy but the sod then rubbed it all so back to the rake again. My boy sweats badly so has to be clipped so you may find you end up clipping anyway.
Have fun with your new horse and mane and tail! Plenty of tail conditioner works a treat.

I would keep the mane short - my IDX has such a thick mane it is a nightmare to do anything with but it does hold the curl of plaiting for about a week! I use a tail rake on her tail and lots of either oil or detangle stuff.
Have fun though if your new horse is anything like my girl he will love a wee spa treatment
