We have a 15 week Standard Schnauzer puppy. She arrived last Tues so has been with us nearly a week and it is a steep learning curve! My OH is the doggy one (she goes to work with him) , I have never had a dog before let alone a pup but she is settling in well and I am getting the hang of it.

She is bright as a button and crate trained so easily, she slept all through the night downstairs from day 3. She also learnt sit, down, stay and paw in only a few tries. Toilet training is getting there. Walking on a lead is interesting and she is still quite nervous but I guess will come with practise. Where we live there are alot of other birds and animals and I guess at the mo it is really exciting for her and she get distracted very very easily. For example we have chickens at the bottom of our garden and these are great fun for her to torment, so much so I am keeping her on the lead in the garden when I am there on my own.

I was just wondering if anyone can suggest an absolutely irresistible toy I can buy that I can gain her attention with when there are so many interesting things around.....me calling (in my most happy encouraging voice!) 'Pepper here' and waving a tennis ball or treat at her just isn't cutting it! We are looking into puppy classes but need something to try straight away...any ideas?

Old walking sock - stick a couple of tripe sticks in and knot the end. Keep it in a plastic bag as it will smell! Or anything soft but with a squeaker, keep it in a bag with tripe sticks so it is also smelly, and you should be onto a winner IME.

Obviously whatever you choose, you must control access to it as it is a toy to be played with with you, not for her to play with alone. :)

Agree anything with a squeaker in. Personally I prefer balls with a string, so you can keep them 'live' and active and tease the dog, and they are also easier to grab when you want them back :p I also use two balls, the dog has one, I have the other and I swap when the dog comes back, it incentivises recall and helps teach a 'leave' or 'let go' command.

Brilliant thank you. I will make noisy smelly toys! The liver cake sounds revolting but will give it a whirl, how bad can it be?!

empty plastic bottles seem to hit the mark for mine. They are great fun & make a lovely noise. You can get furry covers for them in the shops & just replace the bottle as & when they are destroyed. (just remember to remove any attachments, like the label, lid & collar)

Also cheap tubs of pate, let them have a lick & then replace lid so it's clean in your pocket. I've found it to be the best recall treat ever.

Schnauzers are the best! I have a mini schnauzer and she is so smart and affectionate.

Mine will do anything for a dirty sock, or one of my hairbands! A dirty sock is like the holy grail to Alice!

I have a sock fetishist too! I foolishly taught Henry to take my socks off. This was an error... fortunately we didn't practice enough for him to have generalised it to other people's socks...:D
