Irritated cannon bone

Has anyone had any experience of this? My horse has managed to 'irritate' the bone when he gave himself a cut meaning that it is growing some extra, a bit like a splint. People have been telling me varying levels of horror stories about how much trouble this can cause so I would really appreciate knowing other peoples experiences of this.
