hi just need advice really, im am trying to sell my tb at the moment have advertised him for 2 weeks in the yellow papers ect but have had not had many replys,i have been told it is because of his age(he just turned 12) is 12 really that old?does anyone want a" older " horse(not that i think 12 is old)

I don't think 12 is old. My TB was 14 when I bought him. He's 19 now and I don't consider that old either, he's still more than capable of doing everything that we did when I started riding him.

Could you have over priced him? 2wks isn't really that long though

12 isnt old, i bought my pony when she was 12ish.

2 weeks isn't long. It may not be his age that is the reason, may be over priced or not well described/pictured? Or maybe this cold weather is just putting everyone off buying at the moment!

I don't think 12 is too old...My first horse was 12 when I bought her...and was a real livewire!! Probably a very good age to get a 1st horsey really.
Two weeks isn't really very long...I wouldnt worry yet

dont think i have him priced too high, have him advertised for £3000ono but have put home more important than price do you think thats too much,he hasnt done alot in terms of competing but is more than capable of doing anything.

Nope not old at all - 12 is about premium age for a lot of disciplines and ideal age for a first horse I would reckon.

Yep, IMHO. I can't see why people would want to buy horses that someone else has had years of use from while they're in their prime, when they can go and buy a younger horse to last them longer. Doesn't really make sense. You wouldn't buy an old car instead of a newish one, unless it was dirt cheap in which case (back to horses!) will they be able to afford the vet bills for when signs of wear and tear inevitably start to show? Not a popular POV but it is what I think - If I buy a horse I want as many as possible potential years ahead, not one already past its peak. Good luck selling him though, there are alot of people who will purchase older horses.

Whilst I don't think that 12 is old at all - I was keen to buy something in single figures last year when horse hunting.

What does your advert say?? Maybe the wording is off.

hi this the ad that i have used, opinions welcome
16.2hh chestnut gelding 12 years old, good to box, shoe, clip ect good in traffic, currently being schooled and is working in a nice round outline with fantastic paces.boston also has a good jump and is currently jumping 2"6.he would suit a riding club/dressage home, 5* loving home only
and this is him

Maybe it's the "currently being schooled" bit that's putting people off - it kind of sounds like he's had no flatwork training at all. But all in all I'd give you 3k for him if I had it - you don't mention if you're including tack or anything in that though. And do you have a photo with your ad? Cause if not it puts some folk off phoning.

Nice conformation photo - but I think the ad would benefit from a photo of him jumping/schooling as well. If you can only have one photo, then personally for a riding horse I would prefer to see one of them actually performing.

Can you not get the horse along to a local SJ or dressage competition, so you can advertise him with a competition record? Does he hack out alone, as you don't state that on the ad.

With regard to age, 12 is great in some ways if you are looking for a 'seen it, done it' type of horse to give confidence to a rider. However, if people are looking for a potential competition horse, then they may well feel that 12 is too old.

Oooo he is a smart little horse isn't he???

I wonder if the fact that you say 'currently being schooled' is putting people off? It makes him sound uneducated.

Have you done anything with him? Any RC at all or local shows of any type. Sponsored rides or hunting???

He may be a little pricey if not. However, a horse that is 100% in traffic and 'anyone's' ride is worth their weight in gold.

maybe your right, he mainly been hacked, fun rides ect for a few years and he taught my oh to ride so i thought he would benifit from being schooled, and yes it includes all his rugs and bridle but not saddle i missed that out and one of his ads has a photo and one doesnt thanks it good to get opinions from different people
he has done a few local shows, show jumping, hes done loads of fun rides,he hacks out very well in company, but needs a firm rider alone as he can be a little nappy but doesnt do anything.

He is slightly in limbo really, most people who want a 12yo will want a very established and proven horse, and competition people would be looking for a younger horse to bring on, if he is a very safe horse i would establish that in your advert and maybe try and get him placed unaffiliated, then he will sell no probs. He looks lovely.

I agree i think it is the 'currently being schooled' That would suggest to me it has not been schooled in the past. 12 years is a great age for a purchaser. Ready to have fun.
We have a pony out on loan. She is 26. Was used as brood mare for years before she came to us. She is now competeing at shows. Has come 2nd in Dressage, 2nd in cross country. Many placeings in showjumping. She has received many compliments from judges. She has never done anything like it before. She has proved to be a real star and needs holding back as she is enjoying it so much.
12 is definately not old!
Lovely looking horse, good age to buy, good price. The right person has not yet read the advert.
Good luck.

i keep our horses at home at the moment but im selling the house and stables and putting the horses in to livery,so cant afford livery for 3 horses and boston unfortuanty(sp) has to go

He's a fantastic looking horse and I think well worth the money if he's safe when out and about/working. I would do as others suggested and take him to a few shows/dressage comps to get some experience under his belt. 'Currently competing pre-novice with potential to do more' sounds so much better than 'currently being schooled'.

If I had £3k 3and space, I'd snap him up. He's the perfect age for me!

I agree about the schooling part as it does make him sound as if he has not been touched before.

Would also edit to say that he comes with bridle/rugs etc.

I agree that taking him to a few RC events etc may be a good idea.

I would not say that 12 was old though & he isn't too pricey either, you just need to right person to see him

Smart boy though.

im based in northumberland, yes i think the "currently being schooled" is the problem, might try and get him out to some comps thanks for the coments

Personally I think that being good out hacking in company and alone, the fact that he's done sponsored rides happily, taught a novice to ride, and would appear to be a genuine allrounder would be enought to secure a sale.

Not everyone is looking for a competition horse. A nice, sane horse is all (most) people want.

Good luck. He's lovely.

I think he's very nice. Agree that wording in ad could be 'tweaked'
smile.gif
Add that price includes tack and rugs (minus saddle)
I also like the ridden pic, but it's wonky (I'm very anal about that sort of thing) so I've straightened it out for you.
Look how nice

I love TBs but I think too many people think they can get one cheap off the track and school them on themselves when quite often they're mistaken!
