Is 2 years old too young to start jumping....?

Ok, I don't mean it seriously but my 2 year old tonight was very close to starting when he decided to 'help' me as I did a bit of jumping on my horse in the field earlier. I realised that schooling over fences in a field with a 2yo 'helping' you (ie following you around getting very excited) is not actually the best idea.

He did at one point ALMOST follow me over a little upright though. God, I wish i'd had a video camera!

I do think next time though i will do as usual and shut the others away - i don't think my horse was impressed with baby's interference one little bit. I think the baby has potential though! Lol

Horses - you've got to love them!
 
I let my mare and foal into the jumping field to graze while i poo pick and the foal loves to have a good race around. If theres a jump in the way he'll give it a go! Future show jumper me thinks!!
 
Well, I hope he decides he likes it in the future! I think he's feeling v pleased with himself and all grown up at the moment as he went to his first ever show at the weekend and we came 2nd, AND he behaved much better than I was anticipating so he's in my good books currently! Lol
 
Not too young to be popping over a tiny cross pole once in a blue moon for fun, but yea too young to be doing courses or jumping high.

Sounds like he's gonna be a quick learner!
 
I am not 'letting' or encouraging him to jump and, as far as I know, he hasn't jumped anything (who knows what they do when you're not around though!). To be honest though, even if he did decide to pop a small (and I mean small) rail it'd be no worse than the way he throws himself around in a field playing anyway. I am amused by his interest in what i was doing though. He's an entertaining little soul!
 
My 2 yr old hopped over 4 foot post and rail as a yearling, seemingly just for fun! The yearling thinks nothing of hoolying round the field jumping over thistles and bushes etc. The other 2 youngsters tend to go round, Seven deliberately goes over. Not a damn thing I could do to stop him even if I wanted to :D
 
That's what mine loves best - seeing how fast he can run! He tries to wind the others up to go with him but he always has to do at least 2 more laps (up and down the hills) of the field more than everyone else. You've got to love their enjoyment of life (although my mum wasn't so keen when mine wanted to involve her in his game!!!)
 
by heck read that and though WHAT???? lol jumping for fun is ok that im cool with lol but not schooled over jumps :) sounds like your young un was looking for some fun and hey if he follows an enjoys nice one :) x
 
Yeah I sort of did that on purpose as I know how people get here about horses doing stuff too young. He doesn't get asked to do anything testing, just general handling and now completed his first in hand show. I like that he's interested in what I and his field mates are doing though - even if it was a little annoying when he got in the way! Made me chuckle though and makes you realise why we have them!
