Following on from buying a new horse worries thread I've been looking for an 'older' sensible sort for my confident but novice OH. He's been hacking out with me off and on for 8 years but has never had a lesson, he wants a goodallrounder he can have lessons on and hack out safely. I've seen an ad for a 7 yr old but at first dismissed it as being too young to have been there and seen it. The horse is very local so may be worth a look...what do you think?

Just thinking have they really had that much 'life' experience at that age with just a couple of years under saddle... Of course I realise it totally depends on the horse as well I just had this idea off looking at 10+ only.. Could be worth a look as v local and looking for a new yard as well and don't know this one!

Although I will probably now be branded as a time waster I would go and view the horse with an open mind. I bought a 6 year old pony for my very nervous daughter and can honestly say she is the best pony I have ever bought. I too was looking at something over 10 for her but because this one was local went to see the pony a few times and she ticked all the boxes.

Good luck with your search and keep posting updates.

It depends on the individual horse, some youngsters are better behaved than a lot of oldies.

However the ony problem I can see is if OH wants to have lessons and progress he won't be able to teach this horse or school them to learn anything new, so unless you or another is going to school them there will come a sticking point to how much OH can learn.

If the horse will mainly be to hack, then why not, just be aware that there may come a sticking point in what OH can learn from this horse.
