I have 2 horses shoeless & have been for a number of years. I was getting concerned that I was being ripped off by my DAEP as I keep reading on various forums that trimmers are expensive so I did lots of research.
In the SE it can vary between £70 & £90 for a full set of keg shoes, £70 & £85 for a refit. £40 & £50 for 2 fronts & a hind trim, £35 & £45 for a refit.
I found a farrier supply websites to get prices on shoes & nails. A Pair of keg shoes £2.45 x 2 =£4.90 for a full set. Road nails work out 29p each , other nails 0.03p. Working on a regular shoeing with 2 road nails & 6 regular nails in each hoof = £3.04 in nails all round. So over all the cost of materials is £7.94
So on an average price (£80) If you take of the cost of materials (£7.94), time, travel costs, wear & tear on tools (£20 being generous) the price is the trim to receive a shoe immediately is £52.06. For a refit (£77 average) Take off £3.04 + £20.00 expenses only, £53.96 for the trim £1.90 extra for the trim ?
I pay £40 per trim by someone who has trained in hoof anatomy, approachable, awareness of husbandry to help keep my horses sound & hooves healthy.
So after taking the time, travel costs, wear & tear on tools, Knowledge, I am actually left with a trimming bill of £20.00
I dont feel ripped of by my DEAP after all & above all, the health & function of my horses feet are more important to me than tradition.
