Is a wide noseband the best idea for a big/common head?

Hey Guys,

Fingers crossed (and any vibes welcome!) Bentley will be coming back to Dorset and starting work in the next few weeks

..the thing is the poor boy is unfortunate to have a particularly large, and particularly common head

and so I am (A) struggling to find a noseband that fits and (B) wondering whether a wider one might even out the proportions?

He currently has a 1.5" thick raised cavesson with a crank fastening, which is 32" on it's loosest hole and still seems a little narrow and small

Do you think a 2" flat hunter type cavesson might be more flattering? and does anyone have any recommendations for a company who do them in oversize sizes??

Thanks

Yes, traditionally a wide flat hunter cavesson looks the best. As for companies sorry no but I know there are plenty of saddlers who will make one up to your requirements.

Our local tack shop has nosebands you could make a whole bridle out of, so yes, they are available!
They do break the nose up a little. And a common head used to be known as an honest head. My horse of a lifetime had one and was an absolute superstar. Best of luck with him!

My lad has an enormous head, he looked DREADFUL in a padded cavesson. So I agree with jemima_too, must be a plain, flat hunter cavesson!

As for oversize, I managed to get a flat caveseson on ebay for next to nowt. I have another which I had made (on his double bridle). There are a lot of oversize ones on ebay but often cheap leather and usually only raised crank cavessons/flashes!

I would watch ebay though, even so. Can't think of anywhere else I've got my oversize bridlework.

I don't always think so - I will try to find some evidence.

I think the hunter bridle makes his head look even more common than it started out!!

Kitsune your chestnut is adorable!!

This is Bentley with his (naughty) halter on, as a demonstration of him in a narrow noseband

and this is Bentley in his (normal) headcollar, which is 1.5" thick... (also in my avatar pic <<< )

and here is a pic of 5'8 me (yes I know I'm sat down) and 22" Nala with Bentley's head- just so you get some idea of scale

Jeffries do a wide noseband.Friend got one (think it was 2 !/2") for £40 for her 16hh cob who has a rather big head.Looks really smart

Yes!! There is nothing worse than a skinny dainty noseband on a cob or any horse with a large or plain head!! I get mine from Fylde saddlery who do them to fit showcobs, hunters and the like, they will make to measure too, as will jefferies who also make lovely bridles in a massive range of sizes.

I called them earlier, what a genuinely lovely chap!! Pending everyone's agreement on here (which so far is looking unanimous) I will definitely order one from him

Kalli has a huge head!

She looks much better in a wide flat noseband.
This is a 1.5" one. I had the headstrap made longer (was far too short and now it's a bit long and it doesn't go high enough. Typical.

She's currently being ridden in this narrow flash and looks silly. The noseband part is too small so it has to sit too low to fit. It's going to be replaced with a thick padded flash.

Aww thank you for this, yes he does seem an honest sort- and has massive ears to match his massive head, so it is all looking quite positive from a traditional point of view
