Is all hope lost for OH and I ???

OH and I have had to admit that we are a downwards slippery slope.

This time last year horses didn’t feature in our lives at all. Last November I asked OH if I could get a horse as I was bored and our downhill spiral began.

Last year we had a large shed in our garden with OH’s ‘stuff’ in it. Now it is packed with bales of hay, rugs, feed and other various horsey stuff. Our kitchen diner now has two saddle racks in, complete with saddles. Our coat rack now has bridles and riding hats hung from it.

After just three short months of having a horse I got another one. OH had gone from his initial statement of ‘you can have one as long as I don’t have to have anything to do with it’ to wanting to ride. He spends almost as much time with the horses as I do, and Ellie adores him.

A few weeks ago I asked him if I could get a youngster to bring on. He was really enthusiastic and is now proudly showing everyone his ‘baby pictures’ of new baby who should come home to us in a couple of months.

Yesterday we were talking about shows and having to beg, steal or borrow a box. OH suggested we get rid of my little car and get a big 4x4 and a trailer……..

Is there any hope for us, or is all lost

It is! OH is 52 years old and a complete Townie until he met me 6 years ago.

His parents are amazed at the difference in him and what is even better is that OH’s 16 year daughter has started to come and stay again. She suffers from depression and rarely goes out, OH used to have to visit her at her mums. She comes over to stay now and spends a lot of time just sitting in the field watching the horses. She is still a bit scared of them, but it is such a huge improvement in her condition we are chuffed to bits

lucky you, where can i find an OH like that?! really good to hear that the horses are being so therapeutic too. a friend's step-son has depression etc and is being brilliant helping her out with the horses, it is really doing him good too.

That's lovely about your OH's daughter, just goes to show how horses can benefit you in so many ways. I suffered from depression a few years ago, my horses were a great comfort to me then and even now when I feel down I still find just being with them raises my spirits no end.

in a similar situation with my oh. he wants to come horse shopping with me to make sure i get something he likes aswell, has said he will drive the horsebox for me to shows (i plan to be out most weekends) and used to come up the yard most evening and complained when there was nothing for him to help with.
considering he never had any intention of getting involved when i first met him i think we're doing quite well.

You know you are really hooked when he loves his big Clydesdale probably more than he does you - I am certain Andy loved Cairo as much if not more, and he certainly said there were days when he preferred to be with him.

Farra our new clydie is not quite as loved, but she is a daddy's girl and has him wrapped round her hoof too.

He is also very proud of young Stinky and tells everyone how well he is doing.

Downside - having to deal with a broken hearted OH when trying to keep yourself together when the horse dies - worst time of my life last year and he still has not recovered from the loss of Cairo.

Better an OH with a horse than one that moans about the dirt, hair and money.

Totally lost, wonderful isn't it!?
I share my mare with my OH - he chose her and she's much more suited to what he likes to do (western) than what I like to do (showing and dressage).
He bangs on about discipline and letting her know who's boss, then I find him stroking her ears and kissing her nose. At shows, if he has to get off and hold her, he can't do it without giving her sneaky cuddle. Sometimes it's as if she's his other woman

But grooming or tack cleaning, no that's MY job as far as he's concerned....

No poo picking, tack cleaning or grooming for him

He is the good cop, spends time kissing and cuddling and chatting to them while I am running about sorting out the muck heap, digging up ragwort etc.

Still, shouldn't moan, he is great really

I'm jealous too! Mind you, was on a 'first date' the other day that I said I was going to have to cut short as his Highness was expecting his hay and feed, imagine my surprise when 'date' asked if he could come up with me to see Jack

This is terminal!!!

It creeps up on you when you least expect it!! My OH had never been near a horse in his life!

Now, well...he does do the dirty work. Helps hold and look after them when he can, does all the repairs and sorting of the fields. I'm not allowed to do fencing, as I don't do it right!!!!

However, don't suggest getting rid of the love of his life (daughter's old pony) or tears and tantrums will follow!! He adores her, and therefore we have to keep her as a pretty field ornament!!

Maintains religiously to others that "he doesn't "do" horses"!!!

I don't want to alarm you, but, he could take over!!!

OH doesnt DO the donkey work though, which tbf i dont mind as this was supposed to be MY hobby after all, he came for a hack with my at weekend and i got his horse ready for him and i was actually surprised when he untacked her himself when we got back!

My man mucks out, tells me I'm never allowed to sell "his" pony, and takes himself for drives upto the stables at all times of te day to stroke/feed/brush/cuddle the pony

He had never even been near one before, his parents can't understand what has happened!

All is definately lost!!

I met my OH two years ago, he was completely uninterested...took up riding and no stopping him now. He has a 6yr old TB who was orginally bought as a second horse for me but is really totally his. OH loves it, is always at the yard and wears breeches :0

And yes, I do all the mucky stuff!

But I am so proud of my man, to take up riding at 30, totally different from what his friends are into is admirable. And that he has stuck with his horse even when he has been a nightmare!

My OH isn't as far down the slippery slope, but he can't say he wasn't warned!
When I was buying Pickle to share with my son one of his customers warned him that within 2 years it would be one each + a trailer/lorry, then we would want our own land. It was 1 year & 11 months before the trailer was added to the horse & pony but sadly we were gazumped on the land! I can't get him interested in riding (good in that he's 19 stone & would probably squash a horse, bad in that it might give him an incentive to lose weight) but he loves to come to shows & PC rallies. He's even started coming to the yard, but just stands & watches me poo pick taht could be down to the nice pub near the new yard though. He used to ask why people kept a horse that couldn't be ridden but when I said I thought Bobby probably needed to retire he was adament that we couldn't have him PTS (much to my relief - thought I might have to hide him!).

Wish my OH was like that! unfortunately he's allergic to horses plus he doesn't like them. He is def allergic as have occasionally dragged him to yard/ shows.
