OK I know not strictly CR but I don't venture any where else for fear of having my head bitten off!

Just wanted to know if any of your horses have had exceptionaly loose droppings lately?... Soap is fine but Jack and a few other horses on the yard have been very loose of late. We thought maybe it was a tummy bug but they seem fine in all other respects eating up well, and not touchy or grumbly stomachs.

One of the farriers that visited the yard recently whilst shoeing and the horses did a 'splat' remarked 'oh no not here as well' He said all the yard he was going to atm had the same thing and he put it down to all the rain increasing the moisture levels in the grass and giving the horses runny bums!

Does this sound about right?...

It's odd because Soap is 100% fine but Jack is not good, his box has been a horror story for the past week.

Is it water or is it something else?...

Am feeding Jack exactly the same as he has has all winter but should I change to bran for a bit to bind him up or just let it run it's course (no pun intended!)

Sorry pretty grim topic but have had a week of this and theres nothing worse than reaching to do a between the leg strap and getting that wet warm sensation! My OH has strangely gone off giving me a hug as soon as I get home too....I wonder if the two are linked?....hahahahah

Welcome to my world. My horse has been doing droppings like a cow for the past year. It is vile. Wierdly though, today he did his first one which could be identified as a horse poo for a year. So the answer to your question is no!!

it's so gross, but I don't think this is caused by ulcers unless it can come on overnight and affect 5 horses simultaniously?
Jack is grey and he wags his tail alot and honestly it's just hideous! bluuuuurgh!

No, my horses is not caused by ulcers! It was bought on by antibiotics to treat the ulcers. I am sure yours is caused by something in their management and will go away just as quickly.

Could be..... FB has had some pretty cow patty type poos lately. I put it down to a change in roundbales as this one has a higher water content, plus we are feeding hay ouside in the rain so they are getting much more water with it. Interestingly they are both drinking less too.

Nope, I actually noticed how firm Henry's droppings looked this morning. I was surprised as he can often go quite squitty on Haylage and we have just started feeding it.

Is it possibly something that is being washed into the grass by the rain, rather than the rain itself. Like when Fertilizers are washed into rivers etc.

A lot on my yard including mine have been rather loose over the past couple weeks. We put it down to them being in more and on more haylage. Can't think what else it is expept that the wind winds my mare up and makes her a bit wild so could be a combination of the two?

Mine has been producing lots of sloppy very green poo, quite strong smelling too. We changed fields earlier this week with lots of new grass.

Generally he is prone to this anyway, but I rather hope for an improvement during the winter with more hard feed. Not at the moment!

It certainly isnt the moisture levels in the grass!
The metres and metres of intestine are carefully designed to remove that water and if you see and increase in anything due directly to the rain it'll be urine production

My boy has always been affected by wet grass and when we have heavy rain its been terrible. I felt really sorry for him because his tail would swish in irritation and his poor bum would resmble a cows.

My friend's horse is very sloppy at the moment, and it stinks !!

However, a few weeks back I switched my boy to fast fibre and pasture nuts from chop and cereal based pasture mix after reading the H&H article about loose droppings and within a week his sloppy droppings disappeared and desite the recent rain that hasn't changed. He's so much more content.

Could be the rain causing an increase in the sugar contents of the grass, so looser poo?
That seems like the most logical sort of thing to me, but it probably isn't completely right!

yes- we have noticed the same of sporadic diarrhoea, changes from one day to the next- we couldn't decide if it's the haylage, moving between fields/grass due to flooding, or, our favourite answer the rain/flooding. The horses' water comes from a stream, which obviously is very open to changes in content with heavy rain.
