If so, do you enjoy it, how does the training process work and how long did it take you to qualify?

My local RDA centre trustees have suggested I train to become an RDA coach for the centre, which I am definitely interested in doing. I've told them i want to do it and my training/initial assessment starts soon but i'm still rather in the dark about how the training process works etc. I've been doing lots of research and will be talking to the regional assessor in a couple of weeks so will obviously find out all about it then, but for now I was wondering if anyone knows much it about it on here?

Any info/opinions greatly appreciated :)

I can only offer my experience from being mid way through doing the same for my local tiny little group :)

Basically as far as I've had - I've been teaching under supervision, have a copy of my log book and only filled in the front bit. I was meant to have my first assessment months ago but that's now going to be between now and Christmas. Once I've had that and I've been 'approved' I then have to log 20hrs worth over 6 months' so detailing lesson plans, who was riding, issues etc etc. Once I've done that, I then get assessed again and hopefully signed off. I think anyway for the first instructor level. The higher ones involve some theory aspects I think.

Plus I'm semi expected to go to a number of regional training days on various aspects of RDA.

If you can get the instructor of your group to download the 'RDA instructors handbook' pdf - it's really useful. If not I could email across for you :)

I am, and you neeeed to do it. Best thing I've ever done.

Basically, you'll be given a log book to fill out, and you need to get 20hrs of supervised teaching under your belt before your first assessment. This will include lesson plans and a detailed progress report for each rider.

After your first assessment you have a further few months of the same before you're assessed by the regional or county assessor, and if you pass that you're signed off. You need to be re-assessed every couple of years, but that's all fine.

Definitely do it. If you need any help, PM me.

Ditto this entirely, strangely it's exactly how I would of phrased it too :D

I'm an RDAGI currently and just about to undertake the UKCC Level 2 with in RDA and i'm loving it. I'm extremely lucky to work for one of the RDA member groups.

It all seems daunting to start with, but once you get into it, it's easy to follow and really interesting, rewarding, teaches you alot...the list could go on. Being involved with the RDA has been the best decision i've made in my life so far, it's taken me to coach riders to National level and taught me so much about myself. That and they stole my horse :D

Hope you enjoy and if you need any help feel free to send anything my way.

ETA: I'm the one harassing Teapot too, for all her sins and keep bugging her about finishing her GI.

I'm currently a volunteer for the RDA and absolutely love it. It's so rewarding and it really has a huge impact on the children. Definately go for it, you'll love :D

On a side note, if any of you have facebook could you please follow the link in my siggy and vote for my video to help promote the RDA and use of horses in helping disadvantaged children :)

Thank you so much for all of your replies, i'm very happy with the response! Sounds like you all REALLY enjoy it which has got to be a good sign!

I have my first 'meeting' with the regional instructor tomorrow, so i'll let you know how i get on with that.. hopefully she will agree for me to proceed with the process... :)

Appreciate all your offers of help/advice, it could definitely come in handy!! :)
