Sorry, but I thought it was bonfire night ( used to be when I was young many moons ago...) it's now bonfire 2 weeks here! I can't calm/ sedate any of my horses/ dogs for this length of time. Sorry if I'm ranting but why do people think every night, night after night is ok.. Up to 0100 Hrs! (Where the hell do they get the money!) my smallest dog is really suffering now, she' s getting really traumatised. Luckily the horses seem to be coping ok ish. Personally I've had enough of this mental torture of my animals! :(

Im lucky that its only on halloween and new years eve that we get fireworks. My dogs don't mind them and the horses don't seem to care but i have them in just in case. I suspect its a lot of illegal fireworks happening, not proper ones. Its literally unfathomable how people can be allowed to set of explosions with no supervision..if it was a petrol bomb the police would be all over it.

My every sympathy to those suffering from them, I know how badly they can affect animals and people alike. When I was younger and lived in town I used to have a border collie that would start fitting when he heard them, very distressing for both him and me.

Don't know whether if its because people are mindful of the amount of livestock where I live now or just pure luck but not so much as a sparkler let alone anything else! Nearest public display was several miles or so away.

I hate them too spent all day re building all our fences and dealing with a stressed pony who I can only assume had been terrified by some very loud fireworks. He has never been bothered before in his 9 years but last night a pony that you could keep in with a bit of thread went through three rows of electric fence and demolished 50 ft of post and rail fencing in terror. I can think of nothing else that would have upset him this much. He is lucky to be alive as he spent the rest of the night on or near the main road and being a black pony would have been invisible to passing traffic

The nearest public display to us last night was in the fields adjoining the yard's land - maybe 70M away from the main barn. Three of us were on horse-sitting (and rogue firework dousing if necc!) duty and the horses were Not Happy. Even with loads of rescue remedy, the barn doors closed and some very loud music on it was 20mins of audio torture for them. I'm sure fireworks didn't used to be so loud!

we have had weeks of fireworks here and last night the dog lost the plot, got her bottom jaw stuck between the bars on the dog crate, she then broke my glass lantern and spent the rest of the night panting and stressing and had to be kept on the lead in the house.

the horses dont care though

she is stressing again now as they are going off again

I'm one of those miserable people who think they should be banned. I have no problem with organised bonfires and fireworks displays though. At least people know when they will be going off and where. The problem is people would make their own then and that could be worse.

I don't think people would make their own, I just think people don't realise the impact they have on others

Lelly I am so with you on this!!!!!!
So much I have just signed another petition on it.
Public displays yes, on sale to general numphtys no!!!
My friend Helen had one fired over the head of her and her horse the other night. Her field is up against some houses. They aim the fireworks away fro the other houses in to the horses field. She spends two weeks sat up the field in case her barn gets set alight. She is also mad cat lady and has feral cats there and is do worried they will get hurt.

Completely. My pony will run, so been on duty every night ready to rush out and hold him. He can cope with them at a distance, but not close. Had a garden display near us last night with ridiculously big and loud fireworks. Dosed up with calmer and rescue remedy he almost coped, stressed but stood with me. Fireworks never used to be this big and loud. He would wreck a stable and/or himself if he was in. My biggest worry is somebody letting of fireworks at other times of the year when I am not expecting them and not getting to him in time. Organised display, so people know where when and how long they are going on for

Why do they need to be so noisy? They can have the silent ones, they are pretty. The bangs are what scares everything. Its just unnecessary.

They are doing my head in too, they are going off as we speak! Strangely enough and luckily enough, my border collie loves them! She's usually scared of everything but she barks to go outside when they're going off and she plays down the drive with her toys watching and listening to them. Never seen anything like it! She's definitely not stressed either, we can't get her in she just loves being out with them. Weird dog. I do have friends who's dogs are really not coping though and I think it's so selfish for people to carry on this long with no thoughts to anyone else and animals etc.

I suppose I can say in all honestly that I am neither sick of fireworks only because they bore me and I haven't been to a firework display or intend to go.

I am fed up with the bang bang bang though

I hate that they're off every bloody night this time of year.

They should be organised only, and certainly not available in a freaking supermarket.

Not amused tonight as the loudest rockets I've ever heard went off right over our barn (Thanks, considerate neighbours).

Sorry but I don't agree. Certain people from other countries already make there own. God knows what is in them. I also think that you would have to live on another planet if you don't realise how much fireworks can and do upset people and animals alike.

I'm sick of them too, scare my dogs witless. I posted this on my facebook, one of my so called facebook friends told me it's because I haven't trained them, infact they said all dog owners who have scared dogs are idiots as they haven't trained them. They also said I know nothing about dogs and I ought to have my dogs pts if they are scared, needless to say a spat erupted with my timeline going into meltdown.
I blocked the person telling me to put my dogs to sleep!

I don't like them, ponies have been ok but my little dog is terrified of them, she shakes and cries. Like the OP people have been setting them off for the last two weeks! I think they should be banned from shops and if you want to see them then go to an organised display!

My dogs couldn't care less, but there were some seriously big ones going off this evening right next to my yard and Fergs was terrified. They were loud enough to make me jump (and I don't scare easily!). Sounded like the end of the world. I was warned, but there's not a lot you can do with less than 24 hours notice :/

my brother was at mine last night and was really freaked out by how stressed my lurcher was especially when she got her lower jaw in the bars n the dog crate and then smashed my glass lantern when a loud firework went off, my mum is here tonight and she is not a dog person but my lurcher is laying across her legs on the sofa (fireworks are the only reason she gets on the sofa), neither my mum or brother had aclue that animlas can get this stressed abut fireworks.

They started on Wednesday when TWO rockets hit the patio windows and totally freaked my dog...and have continued for five nights, even this evening. Most of my neighbours have dogs and cats and it's a quiet cul de sac....what is wrong with people? I hate them but agree that organised displays on ONE day only, 5th November, would be a compromise. My dog is still shaking and panting, nothing we can do comforts her - she has tried to get in the bath, and the washing machine to get away from the noise......

Can I join the "organised only" campaign, please. We're lucky that a friend lends us their cottage in a remote part of mid Wales for a few days at this time of year, as we live about 100 yards from a pub which hosts a massive public display every year. It's well organised and a good event, but our poor dog goes hysterical as all hell breaks loose quite literally over our heads on the nearest Saturday to November 5th.

Still ... This year we got a few days walking in stunning scenery and spending cosy evenings in front of the log fire with a glass of wine every evening and not and firework anywhere around, so not all bad.

I wholeheartedly agree!!!! am really sick of the loud ones that sound like bombs.. I have had the radio on loud upstairs, all curtains pulled and the tv on loud downstairs, its deafening me!!!!! but this year I have managed to keep my lurcher reasonably calm after using a double dose of zylkene and making sure we are all indoors well before dark. luckily my horse is fine if she is in the stable so my friend has been feeding her last thing so I can stay at home with the dog.. about time it was only organised displays on 5th nov and 1 night at the weekend if the 5th is during the week...its unbelievable that they can be bought anywhere, and by almost anyone...

We have a hotel the other side of a duel carriageway to the field my lad is in, they have fireworks as part of their wedding deals, so we have had the bloody things all through the summer as well!
It's the same around here we have had fireworks for at least two weeks, it's the ones that fizz that the horse really doesn't like. The dogs we have now are ok as long as they are in the house, as are the cats, which are shut in at night, our old border collie would shake and bark, until she went deaf bless her.
I to think it should be organised events only, the ones you can buy these days are far to big to be let off safely in most back gardens.

We've had 10 consecutive days of them now, and I have no doubt there will be more to come since the pop-up shops and supermarkets sell them at half price once November 5th has gone. The 11pm limit is a joke, there are still some going off well towards midnight, usually fired off by morons who no-one in their right mind would employ, and consequently aren't getting up at 7am or earlier to go to work. As to organized ones only - yes, but no as well. Most of the "organized" displays out my way are local church, club, scout events. They do it to raise funds which I suppose is fair enough, but as they want to maximise their profits they deliberately hold them on different days to each other so that you don't get two displays at the same time on the same day, half a mile apart. Personally I think it should be a week before the date in order to buy, like it was in my childhood, thereafter it was illega, and November 5th full stop, not each Saturday and Sunday before and after Nov 5th. And the curfew should b 9pm too. I used to have to leave work early every day, in order to get to my terrified horse as soon as possible after 4pm -once the kids are out of school the bangs start - then sit there until well after midnight stroking her tail to try to calm her. Then back out of my bed at 6.15 to see to her in the morning before for work. It can be very difficult performing well at work on 5 hours sleep for more than an a week. My old yard was only separated from a large housing estate by the width of a motorway, and three guesses which way the rockets were fired - we used to find them in the yard and manege the next moring. It was hell.

I'm with you on the organised only. I am more than a little effed off with private fireworks party. This is how my Saturday went...

Saturday night was spent mostly in Larry's stable as the poor boy has decided that stables and fireworks = the worst fear ever. At midnight the vet arrived and we sedated him for the rest of the night. I will live with his screams of sheer terror for a long time to come. It had obviously started over the first weekend of November when the fireworks parties began in earnest. By Saturday he simply couldn't cope. He was panicking before it was even dark and the bangs started. Outside the confined space of his stable he was fairly calm and unflinching, although still a bit worried, and was even watching the pretty lights. In the stable, unless I was in there with him and holding him very close, he was dripping with sweat, weaving like a maniac, panic rearing and kicking out, pacing and trembling. I could see his heart beating in his chest. I wish I'd videoed it just to show those who think it's fun to have a few fireworks at home in their back gardens just how terrifying it can be for animals. Hats off and a huge thank you to two of my livery friends who last night went next door to see the family having their own little party for the fourth time in a week and demanded they stop. Thankfully they did. I couldn't have faced a night like that again. Larry will have to spend this week doped up to the eyeballs on Domesedan until he feels safe in his stable again.

I love fireworks! Went to a fantastic bonfire at my uncle's on Saturday. He has a bit of land and although not "organised" it was reasonably safe and all the noise was over by 10pm at the absolute latest.

It sounds like I'm lucky in that none of my animals have ever been dramatically upset by them. A bit startled but settle down once they realise it is only noise has been the norm for me.

I agree that the period seems longer nowadays. I think it is reasonable that the nearest weekend (or two if the 5th is in the middle of the week) and the night itself you would expect fireworks but not for weeks on end.
