What with the CC and rising prices of hay, feed and the iminent rise in VAT, I was just wondering if anyone was looking to buy a horse ATM.

Do you expect horse prices to fall further this winter (you seem to be able to get more for your money already) and are buyers waiting for a bargain?

BTW, I'm not selling, just nosy!

Hmm Don't know. Wigton horse sales on sat, may go and take a nosey of the prices.
At a recent horse sales near me (kirby I think, didint go), you could get a horse for £20-£50!!
Minature Shetland got the best price around £500 I think :D

(p.s I just bought a pointer, does that count?)

I'm looking to buy a youngster. Want a shire or clyde cross or something guaranteed big chunky and hairy!!! Ideally I want something 6 months or under, happy to put a deposit and wait on for the right one. I want it young because if it's going to be a big heavy I want to know that it's been handled properly and it's learnt manners early. I want it to be walking out in hand as early as poss so I can get it used to traffic and life in general. I've no rush as my lad is only 9 now so he's no where near slowing down so I'm happy to get a youngster that in 5 or 6 years can take over some work from him and he can start to relax abit. I'm in absolutely no rush as I'm perfectly happy with my lad now and I want to ensure the next one is as wonderful as he is, I'm not someone who buys and sells horses because they don't suit me, once bought they are part of my life 100% and stay with me til death so I have to ensure I get it right with this baby. :D

Is it easy to find shire crosses these days?

In answer to you question about price. TBH the horse I hope to have is not cheap, and he has had a huge amount of interest, and I was lucky to have spotted the ad as soon as it went online and get in when I did. The price the owner is asking isn't reduced because of market conditions, I'm pretty sure of that. Desirable horses are still selling fast I think.

The other people looking on my yard, have been disappointed in what they have been to view. I actually think a lot of people who are thinking of selling may be holding off atm, so that when a good one comes on it gets bombarded with interested buyers? Just a theory?

Not so much. I found a local breeder who has Shire x TB's which I thought ..perfect!! BUT turns out the mares are TB's and from what I've been reading up about them that isn't ideal. If I could find a shire mare who's been put to a TB stallion I'd be happy. I really want something that is going to be at least 16.2 and HEAVY! Saw 2 Normandy cobs for sale recently but sadly they are out of my price range and at 2 years old too old, I don't need something that will need working soon, I've got enough keeping my lad now exercised!!!

I would def be buying at the moment - there seem to be some really fab horses around at the moment and plenty to whet my appetite BUT until we've sold our house, I've got no money to buy a horse - it's so frustrating because I'm presuming that the house won't sell until the property market picks up and by the time that happens, presumably the horse sale market will also have picked up and the horses I could afford now, I won't then be able to afford - grrr frustrating.

DominoBrown, how exciting you've just bought a pointer - is it your first? I've got two of them and love the breed passionately - are yours English or German?

Do you mean poin-to-pointer or the gawjuss doggy Pointers? I have both types LOL

I was looking but found my new boy last weekend, passed the vetting Monday and pick him up on Sat :)

From what I've found horse prices have dropped a lot. Horses that were advertised in Sept at £6.5-7k are now at around £4-5k. My boy was a bargain as far as I'm concerned, I didn't pay the asking price and paid considerably less than the horse was purchased for.

I would be.....

if I wasn't broken......

and.....if I had a secure job, which I don't thanks to stupid redundancy.

However, if I could buy the winter wouldn't put me off. The way I see it I could get to know and bond with the horse over winter, then i'd be ready for a really fun, enjoyable summer.

I'm looking, but trying to work out what the markets going to do, I don't want to spend a lot of money when things seem to be coming down as we speak. I want something with a super jump to do mainly BSJA but also some eventing, so I need a top class alrounder.

I also have 2 German Short Haired Pointers! :p

Yep Im looking but not a lot out there at the moment not in a huge rush tho would like one soon. Im thinking its going to be after Xmas now before I get one.

Yes me. Sold my young horse beginning of Sept and am looking for a stonking but beautifully behaved hunter - fun but sensible. Have got one lined up to see on Sunday but should think its been sold by then.

Ok, here's my current gripe. I have a stunning reg ID for sale priced sensibly at £5500 he sold for just under this as a 4 yr old and is twice the horse he was then and is well schooled and very flashy. I've had two people come to see him, both have looked at him, one person came three times. Both have loved him and made offers ...... of £3500 and £4000 respectively. I have told both this is just not on and both have admitted their budget is only £4000. SO WHY COME AND LOOK AT A HORSE PRICED FOR £1500 OVER YOUR BUDGET!??? There are bargains to be had yes, but a good horse will always sell for proper money and I see no reason why we would give this horse away for any less than he is worth! I can't buy sound, straight, decent horses out of Ireland for under £3500 (and we have been trawling through everywhere! my own new 4 year old who had no breeding papers but is a lovely stamp cost £4k straight out of ireland and he was barely broken and I'm trade!) so this buyers market idea is really taking the piss. Rant over.

I AM!!

I am looking for a pony (well 14h minimum!! Cheers for the tall genes Dad) to play with alongside being more sensible with Mr P.

I do like ponies!! And having been lucky enough to move to a yard with a floodlit arena I can now ride before and after work (Luxury!!!).

I am Worcester based so if anyone has any ideas, send them over (must be broken, good to catch and good in traffic).

I'm sort of looking - been to see six so far, of which 2 were lame, 1 was too small, 2 were not as described, and one might have been ok but the trial facilities were so hopeless I couldn't tell - we drove 90 mins to trot over a barrel on its side in a triangle the size of a front garden. Haven't been to see anything for over a month now, as lost heart.

So as soon as I muster up the energy to look again I will, although at this rate it will be Christmas and I'll have lost the will to live.

Would someone like to find one for me, pretty please?

You mustn't lose heart. It felt the same for me too at first. Not as described seemed to be the norm, and photographs bearing little resemblance to the actual horse. Then I had one that failed the vetting, and then the following day the perfect horse came up for sale. I think it must have been fate the other failed the vet, as I prefer the new one much, much more!

I'm looking to buy, as soon as I sort out a field :D

People will always know you down on the price. This summer was my first "dealing" per say and while a made a massive profit on both ponies (only bought/sold two just to get the hang of it) I was knocked down about £100 on both.
But that was in the summer. There's some very good bargains to be had this time of year, a lot of dealers and people looking for winter projects will be in luck.

Sorry guys but my 'pointer' is about 16hh. Assumed people would think point to point horse, sorry! I even was about to change it when I was typing it.
(Saying *fingers crossed* a puppy might be on the cards :D :D My freind has a pointer dog which is very cute and funny but we I think puppy will be getting, if at all, a black lab)

I think horse prices are alot like house prices - three/four years ago they were ridiculous and are now more sensible because most people simply cannot afford to pay silly money anymore. And if the media is to be believed re. redundancies, pay cuts and price rises, will there be fewer people able to buy horses?

I AM!
Too far away to be of any relevance to any of you though ;)
Probably going to have to import though because there seem to be no dressage youngstock (3+) for sale here at the minute with decent breeding, conformation, temperaments and talent!

Bought my girl 2 weeks ago.

I looked at several dealers, but only one privately. I felt that private homes were being a lot more unrealistic about price than dealers were.
