Just wondered as now the sun is shining a bit more, the spring grass is starting to poke through. My section b (who lives on fresh air) is out unrugged and wondering if it's doubly cruel to also muzzle in the day? (he's in a small paddock at night with a light rug on).

Wish we had grass to muzzle for!! My field looks like it's on the top of Dartmoor, all the grass is brown and there is little sign of anything growing!

it's still too cold for spring grass here the temperature was -5 last night and 8 during the day, mine are out naked 24/7 I wouldn't muzzle over last years autumn grass it'll have no goodness in it

God God where are you? you have grass GROWING?

i suggest you keep your location quiet or there will be an influx of grass crazy horses and their owners camping out in your area.

seriously if the grass is coming through then yes i would muzzle as if you are one step ahead of the game you are most likely to win. does he have more access to grass during the day or at night though?

Yes mine is muzzled now. We have a bit of the green stuff and with the frost at night and strong sunshine by day I thought it wise! Better safe than sorry. Our starvation paddocks are looking rather green at the moment, so will be a while before he can go in there.

Ha! Yes we have grass but then I am lucky in that we have 5 acres and 3 ponies. We have a covering of winter grass but I can certainly see a taint of green coming and I just want to be ahead of the game as he got a bit fat last year. Muzzle it is tomorrow then :)
Oh, and I'm not giving my location away too much but I can say I've got good old fenland drainage :)

Yep, Tiny Fuzzy has been wearing hers for the last week - when going out in a better paddock in the daytime. Has got a good covering of grass that is slowly going now..... but was rested up from last August, so they are just browsing over the top while its dry.

One hint of rain & they will be totally back in winter trash paddock till any of the other paddocks pick up

Being horseless I was admiring my shooting new grass which has sprouted some baby shoots amongst the old grass. Its very strange as mine would normally be trashed too! I did think that people will get caught out, sunshine/frost laminitis.

Sadly no trashed field ...makes a change! I was thinking how much hay I would have got through this winter. My field has never been green at this time of year coming out of winter!

Sorry to be so pointless not having any 4 legged friend but I would be watching the grass. Above 5 cent it grows(if you have any of course).

I'll keep you all updated with the grass growing - always know when it happens, as my bloody neighbour is outside mowing and mowing and mowing, then strimming and mowing.

I would, and have been, although I think I may have been caught out - my mare had pulses in all four fetlocks this afternoon so she's back inside, on bloody soaked haylage cos she won't eat the hay - it almost seems like sacrilage to soak haylage! I just hope we've caught it in time. ?
