Is cortaflex good?

My horse has suspected arthritis as he has low grade lameness somewhere in his right hind. He is booked in for a bone scan in a months time, in the meantime I was thinking of putting him on a cortaflex type supplement and seeing if that helps.

Has anyone tried it, has it helped, what do you do with your horse now if it has helped?

I personally believe there are better supplements than cortaflex. The active ingredients in cortaflex are a tiny % (read the tub).

Look for a supplement with at least 10g per day (500kg horse) of glucosamine HCL (not sulphate), otherwise you are wasting your money. Preferably with chondroitin sulphate as well, although this makes the supplement more expensive. MSM is a useful ingredient because it acts as an anti inflammatory.

Ye I've read about those ingredients, but I don't know which products are best, everything is from America!

Don't worry, I am going to speak to my vet, I have left a message for her so she should ring me back by next week, I just like to be...proactive!

I understood Cortaflex is the only one with small enough molecules to actually absorb and make a difference. I thought it had, had independent trials done on it that proved it works?

IMO the trial was flawed. They selected the horses before the trial and then threw one out half way through because it gave unfavourable data! (ETA i dont think the research has ever been published in a peer reviewed journal, so it cant be that good)

As for the molecule size thing there is little decent evidence to back this up, its mainly marketing as far as i can see. There is generally a dearth of research into supplements for horses full stop but 10g Glucosamine HCL a day is the recognised (current) recomendation. Extrapolating from human studies is helpful and G HCL and chondroitin is better than G alone

I have just moved from Cortaflex onto Naff Superflex powder. I have found it much better, and have also found that it has slightly reduced his windgalls as well. Have a chat with your vet, as they may have a product that you cen get directly from them, or may be able to advise you of what may be best to use.

I use cortaflex HA and have found a great improvement in my lad (farrier noticed he is less stiff & crampy too) I would be very reluctant to change to another

I am using Superflex on Ella at the moment, just about to move onto Equistro Flexedin as prescribed by vet. I have to say, the Superflex has made one HELL of a difference to her, she is like a different horse to ride and she no longer trips with her front feet when going up or down hills (which she did before due to reduced mobility in her knees).

my old horse is now on cortaflex as he was beginning to slow down and look a little stiff, plus his legs filled over night if he was kept stabled. He has been on it for just over 2 weeks and the difference is unbelievable. He is keen hacking out and spooking at everything just like he did as a youngster again.I have also used it before on a horse with sacroilliac problems and it worked well for her as well. We have a few horses at the yard on synequin and they all swear by it.I have to say it is good but somewhat expensive compared to cortaflex. The old lad will continue on that, then may have the cortaflex HA if it becomes not as effective and then maybe something stronger after that.I don't believe in giving them too much in the way of supplements when the milder version works well enough.

I have tried just about everything, and cortaflex was one of the ones that did nothing. Neither did synequin. Horse has been on superflex for about 3 yrs - if he misses a day he is very very stiff (arthritic 7 yr old).

He is also on arthriaid now, and I thought it was working really well over the last 2 weeks but he was very stiff and shuffly last night. Will see how he is tonight. He is still on the superflex though - wont ever take him off that. Just looking for something else as superflex doesnt have the required daily amounts (although I double dose to make sure he does get it) but just looking to see if anything else works. So far nothing and tried cortaflex, gold label glucosamine 2000, extraflex, equiflex, riaflex, pernamax, synequin, and now arthriad. Have bought some suppleaze and will try the premier flex one too.

On the anti-inflam side I have devils claw, boswellia and just bought vetrofen. I found boswellia works better than DC and is kinder on the stomach, not tried the vetrofen yet!
