Is equestrian clothes sizing different?

Hello, I have a funny question but I am really curious if equestrian clothes have different sizing? I'm size M/European 38 or UK10 in most shops. When I was buying my first jodhpurs in the UK, to my horror I had to exchange size 12 for size 14 and as it was still small, I ended up with UK 16. Please don't be offended but if I would buy this size in the usual shop, I would probably use it as a tent. Why is the sizing so different? I have the same experience with two brands now, Horze and Harry Hall. Strange thing is that the T-shirt fitted perfectly. I would like to buy a Horze jacket and I am really not sure if I should straight away just buy 3 sizes larger than usual? My old jacket is a mess so I need to buy something online. Thanks a lot!

Funnily enough, I often find the same with both johds and ski trousers and was saying this the other day to my friend. Usually an 8-10 in 'human' clothes, including a variety of brands of jeans and trousers in my wardrobe. When I switch to breeches, johds, or salopettes I nearly always have to go up a size or two....

Me too! Two sizes up for jods or breeches. Maybe others like them absolutely skintight?? I like to able to breathe.

I just take sizes as a general guide these days, I have such a variety in my wardrobe it's laughable!

I think it depends on the make but it does seem to be more of an issue with equestrian clothes. I think there's less variation in style to account for different shapes - they assume all riders are really tall and slim, with no boobs and maybe a bigger bum if anything. I'm apple shaped so big boobs, and a bit of a tummy but no hips or bum. i'm a 12 in trousers and know that shapes that suit me but have a few pairs of 32" breeches which translates to a 16 and they're still tight on the waist but a bit baggy on the bum. I also find equestrian tops really short. I'm not particularly tall (5'6 1/2") but I have short legs and a long body and the big boobs don't help. Horsey tops always leave a gap and at my age and with my tummy it's very unsightly. It's a bit better now that I've found Flexars - riding leggings that have a very high waist - but it's because of the high waist rather than the tops being any longer. I tend to just go for sports tops now rather than horsey ones and wear a long vest from Primark (where they are sold as dresses in the summer ) or M&S underneath to be sure I don't flash my tum at anyone.

I find it varies between brands with some I have to go up a size, others down and some are true to size. I also find they vary when mapping the sizes so a euro size 44 is marked as 14, 16 or even 18 on the label in different brands.

Thanks for answers! tbh I'm glad I'm not the only one! I guess it is true that they assume riders are slim and tall but I would still expect a little bit more alignment with "normal" brands. I mean it is always one size up/down even in well-knows shop but 3 is a lot :D Well I ordered my jacket so wish me luck!

I think it is because people younger than me (late 50's) are happier to wear tighter clothing than I am comfortable with and perhaps the equestrian market is aimed at the younger end of the age spectrum. So, I buy bigger sizes just so it isn't quite so figure hugging! I am a size ten and quite proud of my figure, but not to that extent :)

It must depend on the make, I’m a 10 and I buy breeches and jodhpurs in a 26 or 28. I’ve never had to buy bigger. Also I never see sizes 10,12 etc in jodhpurs, only waist sizes.
