my mare gets reakky bothered by flies in summer and i want to feed her garlic once the bugs start. she is 14hh, cobby type, how many fresh garlic cloves would be equal to buying and feeding a ready made supplement?

just wondering if it would work out cheaper as i can grow my own!!

I have no idea what quantity of fresh equates to dried but i tried using fresh years ago and gave up after a week! You have to crush the garlic as most horses wont eat big chunks. The crusher got clogged up and needed washing every day. And i stank! Much easier to use the dried stuff, even if more expensive. I thought using fresh was a great idea, until i tried it!

i would buy it in a tub, also i would buy granules instead of powder as the will take it in better because powder goes everywhere and goes up your nose when put it in the bucket.

Mine eat whole cloves - skin and all. I usually feed at a rate of 2 cloves for 1 scoop of powdered. He loves garlic though and could happily eat the entire tub/bulb.

Hiltons used to do dried garlic flakes and they included the skins etc.

I buy powdered chinese garlic for £3.50 for 1 kg and it last about 8 weeks fed at 2 x 25ml scoops a day. I dont have the facilities to grow my own otherwise I probably would.

I buy garlic bulbs, split the cloves up and put them in a 2 ltr bottle of sunflower oil....wallar....garlic oil!
It gets a tad on the strong side though!
