Hi

I am moving yards soon & currently my horse gets hay with a bit a straw to keep cals down.

New yard will supply hay but have better haylage, due to the current issues with hay. I am worried if he is given haylage, as he is a very good doer & can be a bit over reactive to stuff - would haylage make these problems worse?

Is there a good way to deal with not so good hay? or a way to reduce the effect of haylage??

Thanks :)

I would imagine that it would be ok- i have 2 sharp horses and one can be very spooky at times too which would be made worse if he is on the wrong type of feed! they both get rye haylage and are fine on it, but they have set rations!

I would try to find out as much in to about the haylage as possible for example if he is a good doer, meadow grass haylage, rather than ryegrass would prob be better for him, and also find out what cut it was, whether first or 2nd cut- the second cut would have been made later in the summer and so won't be quite as nutritious which again would be better for a good doer. Also if it is weighed each time they can't be over stuffed on it and you can judge how much they get and what they look like. Haylage with a dry consistency that is almost like hay never seems to be a rocket fuel like as some that are richer!

If not, could you feed half and half, ie soaked hay and then mix in a bit of the haylage?

depends which one blue green or mauve

my mares son has the blue as he is very sharp but they can put allot of weight on but being he gets weezy on hay as his mom is asthmatic i use the blue and give him magic calmer she gets the green one

i had the same concerns as all 3 of mine are very good doers and daughters horse is v sharp and spooky. however i buy the high fibre haylage, think its second cut and there has been no change in weight gain or behaviour. also she has not had grass as on box rest so has had it day and night.

My Coblet got moved on EH Haylage recently due to us not being able to get hay. I thought it would send him loopy (He reacted bad to CALM and condition cool mix for God's sake lol) but he actually hasn't reacted at all.
