I bought my boy Oct 2008 at 3 yrs old, gelded. He has always been a cheeky one to handle.

This morning put my 16h TB mare in the same field with him. They are usually separated but this morning it was easier to put them together for 5 minutes while I sorted their stables.

I can't believe what happened next: he kept sniffing her behind an nipping her rug as if to play. He does this allot to the other horses. He then charged at her, and covered her. In repsonse she did an almighty buck and kicked him in the face. He stood there winded and not looking very happy.

I separated them immediately.

Is it normal for a gelding to do this? Is he a rig!? Should I just chill out?

Knowledge on this would be a great help!

How old was he when he was gelded, do you know?

Mine was gelded at 5 as he was too dangerous to handle as a stallion. Until he was about 7 he acted like a rig! He would be nasty to mares, mount them and get incredibly excited if he met any mares out hacking. He got over it after a couple of years.

If your not sure its probably best to get the vet to do a blood test, we did for mine, but he wasn't.

Has he been turned out with mares before?

If he was gelded late and had been able to serve a mare he will remember or he could be a rig. A blood test would be best that way you won't keep wondering. Best to be sure

If you bought him already gelded at 3 years old then he wouldnt have been gelded particularly late. Id imagine he has never been used to serve a mare prior to being gelded because if he had he would have known that then was not the time to do it. He could have been gelded incorrectly or he could have a retained testicle but you wont know for sure unless he is blood tested or opened up to have a look to make sure it is a clean and correct gelding. I personally think he is just an immature horse who doesnt know how to understand herd mentality very well. Does he usually live in a field on his own? If so then I think the behaviour was understandable as he might just have been over excited at having a friend to play with.

Hmmm my friends horse is a rig I don't really know how he behaves around other horses (like in the same field) coz she turns him out alone... he can be a bit cheeky at shows too... But she did buy him as a rig so she got told how to handle him!!! He's also on a thing called 'Rig Calm' which she said sorts himout!!!!

He was gelded late but saying that my horse in 7 and I bought him as a 6 year old stallion, and he was a night mare he spent him life on his back legs screaming at anything that moved... he has had alot of foals!!!

I gelded him when I bought him though coz he was just TOO bad and he is the quietist thing you can handle now, never rears, doesn't care about other horse I can turn him out with mares and geldings and he takes no notice, he's just the sweetest easiest horse EVER!!! so if he was gelded late it doesn't necessarily means he is a rig!!!

I would get him tested by a vet
