Got my 4 yo ISH in may and in that time he has grown about an inch now standing at 16.1hh is he likely to grow much more or will he have finished? Physically he looks mature and filled out!
I think life height certificates are not done until a horse is seven years old (correct me if I am wrong) but I doubt he will grow much more than a couple of inches, if at all. I am not an expert on that breed though!
Try the string test; it's remarkably accurate. Measure from the point of the elbow to the ergot (back of the fetlock), keeping end of string on elbow, swing string up to the withers - the distance above the wither (if any) is the eventual height of horse (mould to horse's shoulder contour).
Dumb question coming up! Cortez when you say point of shoulder do you mean at elbow?
Sorry if this sounds dumb! Would like to try string test on my 4 year old
i did the string test on my 4 year old and that reckoned that he has another 3-4 inches to go, which would be great if he did but thought it was a little last for that. he is still croup high though and quite a last developer as was malnorished for the 1st 2 year. but surely that isnt likely?!
N&F
When I do the string test I drop it to the floor - that would give 1-2'' which seems more realistic. It does work - I did it on a youngster that was sold as to be 16 h - I said 'and the rest' and it grew to the 18 iI predicted, but didn't finish growing till it was 8.
I've been trying to work this out for Bree as I believe friesians are late maturers - she has quite a small dam at 15.2hh, but her sire is 16.3hh. She was sold at 3 1/2 as 15.3 and was sold to me as 16hh at 4, but was 15.31/2 when I measured her 4 months ago. I will see if I can find the measuring stick today.
