The news is full of Mr Stauss-Kahn's arrest for alledgedly trying to rape a chamber maid in a 5* New York hotel. He has ( or had ) a very powerful job being President of the International Monetary Fund which is a world bank based in Europe. Not to be confused with the World Bank which is based in America.

Now, as far as is known the supposed attack happened in the privacy of a suite so there's only two people who really know what went on and they are the victim and the perpetrator and no information on any forensic evidence has been released.

The American police have come down firmly on the side of the chamber maid as a lady of previous good character, banged up said powerful man having arrested him off of an aircraft just before take-off - this could look like an attempt to flee.

Now, it wouldn't be the first time that a rich & powerful bloke thought he could have some nooky on the side and may be plan to buy off any trouble later.

This case is also complicated by the very fact that the accused is a powerful man - and all of those have enemies.

So did he or didn't he? Discuss.

For my part - I think he looks like and out and out rotter!

That somebody can pack up and leave in such a hurry without their mobile phone is rather bizarre in imo.
Me? I get about 1 call a week, so leaving my phone wouldn't be a biggy, somebody who probably does much business on his must have been in one hell of a rush to leave it.

That could be the first part of a Conspriacy - because we have not been told where the phone was found. He probably has more than one. It could have been lost down the side of a chair with a dead battery etc., etc., If it was sitting on his bedside table it could be fishy but who knows - but the fact that it has been reported widely means that people are out to get him. A sex story is always a good way to get at someone because some of the mud will stick regardless.

Although I've actually read that he didn't instantly flee to the airport, as has been claimed, but stayed to have lunch in the city. I find it hard to see why she would lie, but then again, who knows?!

"innocent untill proven guilty"?

Someone told me yesterday that this wasn't the case in the US, is that true?

Personally, I think he's probably no gleaming paragon of virtue but it has conveniently (for M. Sarkozy) come before the French elections as as all the pregnancy blarb with his silly wife (whether he's the Father or not is another matter :D)

There seems to be allsorts coming out the woodwork now. As said, he's probably a dirty ole git with a reputation that would make him an easy target for a trumped up sex crime.

If it is true - I hope he enjoys his twilight years in a US prison.

I have no idea if it is the same in the UK, hopefully someone will let us know!

And so do i!

If it turns out not to be true then i hope she will be proscecuted.

he should ask for Kenneth Clarke to be on the jury

as has been said only 2 people know what went on in the room. the whole 'trial by media' thing disturbs me tbh (any case, not just this one), how can they get an unbiased jury when so much is leaked/reported to the press

I do find it suspicious that the french elections are next year, that they've made a point Of showing him in handcuffs, and that a day later Obama is making a speech about (amongst other things) writing off a billion of eygpt's national debt...

Whilst the IMF isn't the world bank, the two are very entwined with each other and policies, and America has a large influence in both.

He may well be guilty- but I find the timing highly suspicious!!

Especially if he had such a nickname in France- people will be more inclined to believe the worst.

We shall see :):)

Oh US TV media is the best I have ever seen. If any of you have ever watched as certain news channel over there. They get a news story and then make it into a total soap opera. Making their own conclusions and turning the viewers into thinking that the person is guilty sometimes before they are even arrested. There is no innocent until proven guilty in their eyes.
