Is he over rugged?

I clipped baron about 6 weeks ago at which point I put him in a MW turnout in the day with full neck and a HW stable rug at night (he was fully clipped with legs left on)

I clipped him again yesterday as his coat was really wooly again. I used fine blades so he now has litrally no hair at all (oops). I left his legs on but plan to take them off wednesday as it went dark before I got to do his legs.

As I had the HW stable on him before yesterdays clip I put an underug on aswell with half neck, and he is turned out today in a HW with full neck. Do you think I am over rugging him?

As long as he's not too hot then no.

If you over rug the horse will sweat very quickly and you'll soon know about it. The temp is really starting to drop now and it sounds to me that you have got it right.

Feel the base of his ears, if they are cold, pile more rugs on.

as long as he isnt sweating then i wouldnt worry, but remember we've got a lot of colder weather still to come, so piling on lots of rugs now when he dosent necessarily need them will mean you will need to put more on when the really cold weather comes.

My two are both in HWs with hoods during the day and night, but when it gets really cold they have both got under rugs that i will be putting on them.

He didnt appear sweaty this morning so I guess he should be ok.

I think I'm 'mean mummy' at the moment - MW in/out rugs on hunter clipped horse most of the time as it hasn't seemed very cold to ke yet plus he's in every day by 4pm and in in an indoor stable block. I think the coldest here has bee about 5 degrees one night and he seems fine so far.

hi it all depends on your animal if they feel cool under there rugs put more on if they are sweating put less on it trial and error to see what is best for him (hopefully not too many errors) mine are all different some are in MW some in HW just watch what the weather is doing and your horse will be fine sounds like you are doing nothing wrong to me

No, you would know if you over rugged him, my horse is smothered in them, he is neige.

It does sound a bit much considering the temperature is nowhere near as cold as it's going to get. You're better with either the heavyweight on it's own (that's why it's called that because it's meant to be warmer than normal remember) or two thin ones which will trap air between them.
If you use up all your options now there will be a massive amount of weight on him to carry if you end up using the heavyweight plus an underrug.
I think you're just trying to be kind but I bet he is hot!

only you can tell. I have a really hot horse, who is fully clipped out and wears a MW no neck rug at night and another horse who has a HW with neck and duvet and hood as he is always chilly. Its just an individual thing. Just keep checking under his rugs!!
