As some may know, I have been bringing Chancer on very slowly since the age of 18 months. He now long reins, works on a lunge - I use the whole school rather than staying on a circle and has been backed and now am hoping to start short hacks. He is just 3. No schooling other than what we have done - walk, halt, turns and occasional trot (enough to hack out) will start until he is 3 1/2 and I don't intend to canter or do anything more than very light schooling until nearer to 4.

I am showing him once or twice a month - mainly BSPA affiliated shows. One comment I had with his showing is that he is a little on the forehand and could carry himself better.

My instructor has suggested starting to use a pessola on him - either on the lunge or long reining for building up to 10 minute sessions three times a week to encourage him to start to work from behind and start building a correct self carriage. He said if he were older, this could be done by riding, but he is not going to be at that stage for another year.

Anyone have a view on this - is starting to do a little light pessola work as a 3 year old going to harm him? Physically he is very chunky and not a long legged lanky sort - typical short backed gypsy cob.

Personally I wouldn't use a pessoa on a horse of that age or build. I think you will achieve everything initially that you want to by continuing to do what you allready do - and with the addition of the quiet hacking.

i'd say you're doing a bloomin sterling job as you are

why risk spoiling it by being too ambitious too soon? but i'm old fashioned that way.

i personally wouldnt use a pessoa, i would continue long reining i think that would help in him carrying himself better...
