We're moving my 11.1 Welsh Sec A to the livery yard where my other horse is next week, for convenience amongst other things.
He's 16 now, but happy and healthy - other than being a little bit fat :o Stocky little thing, not like the typical A's you see now, decent bone for his size. Never been properly schooled in his life (spent most of 9 years before we got him in a field), has popped the odd jump when we've got his confidence up, spooky to hack but manageable.

Is there any hope of educating him a little? Or should I just stick to hacking him a little - he'll happily walk, trot, stop, and I can deal with his spooks - and walk/trot around the arena a few times a week?
I'd just like to give him something to do, and the exercise would do him good as he is a little wide :p He's not exactly old for a pony, and I do miss riding him :o (don't worry, I'm only 5'4 and about 7 stone so not going to squish him ;))

Any ideas what I could do with him? Or where to start? Or should I just let him be happy and enjoy playing in the fields?? :p

There was a 19yo pony at my old yard and the YM said to me that it had never cantered in an outline and never would. Within two days he was cantering on both reins in an outline!! So yes I think that I should start riding him and schooling him again :D

If you wanted to do something a bit different maybe you could clicker train him or something? I can't remember what they were called but there was a lovely series of videos on youtube from a girl who taught her little welshie spanish walk, to 'bow' and do pirouettes etc. I'm not sure how she did it, but i would love a fun little pony to have a play at stuff like that with. I bet it's the sort of thing cheeky little ponies would enjoy as well, as they always seem to be up to mischief. I don't think age really comes into it, and i think a lot of welshies like to learn as they are cheeky and curious by nature.

ETS: and it's not as far to fall if you do come off when trying to teach tricks and stuff :)

Thanks both of you! :)

Squeak - that's something to aim for then! I'm sure he's more than capable, and he's got gorgeous movement (when he wants to try!) But he's just naturally quite lazy so getting much from him is hard work :o

somethingorother - that's a point :D He probably could do it too, might get some odd looks though! (yard is mainly a competition yard, almost all liveries have pretty competition horses :p) Plus, there's no worry about him doing any interesting stunts with other people as he'll never be sold :)

Who cares what the others think, Mr Dimples is fab! You can be riding round bareback on him, while I bet the other riders would go jelly if they didnt have a saddle :D
