I brought 2 of my horses in from the field on Wednesday, Welsh C and D. Both fine to travel, one sweats up a bit but in general good ponies. Noticed on the camera that the mare was shaking her head and had stopped eating her haynet, go to unload and she is dripping in sweat! (Only 15min journey) Walked her off the box and she was grunting and groaning, then she arched her back and retracted her neck! Great, choke! Walked her round to cool her off and she was still tensing. Waited a bit but decided to call the vet to be safe (unfortunately we lost a veteran because of choke a few years ago) As I'm speaking to the vet over the phone she coughs and brown snot comes pouring out of her nose! Absolutely fine.
The next night walked her out, go to bring the other one out of his stable and he's dragging each back leg in turn! Locked patella
. Absolutely mortified because I've never had one or really seen one do it. The click was really loud, so after yesterday and being a bit emotional I called the vet straight away! Walked him round and gave him some meds and will see how he is tonight.
Feeling a bit gutted, it all seems to come at once and why is it always the welsh ponies! Relieved I didn't have to pay an expensive call out fee (only ever poorly out of hours, of course!) And have to say vets were brilliant over the phone. Felt a right numpty calling 2 nights in a row for ailments that usually correct themselves. Plus, I never put myself down as a softy but clearly am!
Hope they will behave now. People say things come in threes but I don't have 3 welshies
